On the Drawing Board

I’m extremely busy with a tough deadline for Wednesday morning, but hope to keep the “Dreaded Deadline Demon” at bay on The MAD Blog if possible. Here’s a quick piece I wrapped up last week for the client I do the workplace posters for… pencil, ink and final color stages. Click each image for a close up look: Pencil roughs. The client wanted me to tone down the “anger” in the old lady driver, and make her look more annoyed than fuming. The also asked me to make one of the two onlooker ladies heavier. Final inks reflecting those changes. Final color. In the case… READ MORE

Hoo Hah! A few projects ongoing right now and sadly not much I can share yet. Here are two pieces I did a few months ago that is part of the “Super Capers” movie project I have been working on for some time now. They don’t give anything away as far as the movie goes, so I think it’s okay at this point to share them here. Sometimes jobs evolve as they progress along, and this particular job has definitely done that. The movie is a superhero spoof/comedy and my part of the production was to be three different jobs… “turnaround” illustrations of the 14… READ MORE

Back to the studio tonight, then back to the usual thing. The freelance work doesn’t stop when I’m on the road, and this trip was no exception. I finished a product illustration job while here in Massachusetts using my Wacom tablet for part of it and borrowing my buddy Ed Steckley‘s new Cintiq portable for the last part. I have to say I thought it worked very well and may have to pick one of those up this summer. I also did the above sketch for a workplace poster job while sitting at the theme park in between drawing caricatures and working with the new… READ MORE

Still unbelievably swamped with work and deadlines…. I’ve got several jobs “in the can” as they say (meaning done) and several more with deadlines either creeping up, looming or trying to kick my ass right now. I just finished this one the other day for the workplace poster company and can share it right away as the client doesn’t mind me doing so: Click for a closer look… It may look like I cheated and used a photo background, but I actually cheated and used the fully painted background I did for a piece I did for MAD a few years ago called “Rejected Characters… READ MORE

Here’s another of those posts detailing what I’ve currently got on my board. Frequent readers may notice I don’t do these very often anymore. I don’t like posting about jobs I’m doing because in 99% of the cases I can’t show you any of the art because it’s bad form to share it before it’s seen publication. However, this is a blog about freelance illustration, and it provides some insight into the life of a freelancer to see what kind of workload and types of projects are being taken on. So, here we go: MAD Parody- Five pager of a TV show that has been… READ MORE
