On the Drawing Board

The above is a very quick gag cartoon I did for a travel agent website that is now up and running. I was supposed to do regular cartoons as updates but I don’t know if that is going to happen. I’m just throwing it up here for the sake of having some art in this post, since as always I can’t share my latest jobs until they see publication. I’m going out of town to St. Louis and the National Caricaturist Network Mini-Con on Sunday, so last week and this week have been/are crazy with my trying to get all my jobs out the door… READ MORE

I received this project right before I left on vacation and had to kick it out in extremely short order. The concept is a story about studio executives and anonymous comments made by directors and other movie makers about the good and bad things they do (mostly bad). The job was for an L.A. based movie industry magazine, and it was to be in black and white… partly their choice and partly due to the time constraints. One full page and three spots with caricatures of specific studio execs. Since it was in black and white, I thought it would be fun to do a… READ MORE

Sketch O’The Week

This is just a goofy doodle I did working up some concepts for a spot illustration job. It reminds me a little of a piece Hermann Mejia did in MAD a while back with Spartans on a game show of some kind. Then again it also reminds me a little of a Wally Wood drawing… except not as good. READ MORE

It never fails… whenever I am about to try and take a little time off the phone starts ringing. I always feel guilty when I start complaining about having a lot of work… I am very lucky to stay busy. Still it would be nice to go on vacation without either having to pull some all nighters to get jobs done or having to bring something along to finish up when on the trip. Here’s the final for that workplace poster I showed the sketch of the other day: Click for a closer look… … I just got a rush job for an L.A. based… READ MORE

Kind of quiet on the drawing board right now, after a crazy December. Once that MAD job was in the can a week or so ago I have just a few smaller jobs with no crazy deadlines in sight. Here are some things I’ve got going that I can share: Advertising Character- The client wanted a simple, small spot of an adult male with a “Home Alone” kind of expression. Very quick job. Pencil sketch and final after some revisions to tone it down a little and change the hair, etc…   Sherlock Holmes Illustration- This is going to be used by the same folks… READ MORE

I’m just finishing up the artwork for the National Cartoonist Society’s 2008 Reuben Weekend, and I’m getting deep into that MAD TV parody which is due soon… a few other little jobs here and there as well, plus one very major project for a movie that will take up much of the next few months. More on that later… I just finsihed this magazine cover for Scholastic on Wednesday and I was surprised that they said I could share it here whenever I wanted to, so there it is. It’s along the same lines as the cover I did a few months ago: Initial pencil… READ MORE

Lots of projects at lots of stages right now but as always nothing to show until things get into print. In the meantime here’s the latest workplace poster. I often manipulate relative sizes of people or objects for either composition purposes or effect with these poster illustrations, and here is a prime example. I made the lady “winning” the race much bigger than her co-workers because I wanted to force the perspective a bit without having to draw those others too far in the background. That was because the humor of the piece rests in the actions and expressions of those other characters. Here’s the… READ MORE

Yikes. Things have gotten a little crazy this month. All these jobs are due at some point before the end of the year: MAD– after some delay I’m finally working on the afore mentioned TV show parody… one I’ve been hoping to get. I wish I could share the name of the show, but that would be super irresponsible of me. I guess I’ll have to exercise an almost heroic level of self control and not fly off the handle and spill the beans. However if any of you were mind readers, you’d really go nuclear over this one! 😀 Workplace Poster– Another one of… READ MORE
