On the Drawing Board

In the freelance world, it’s often feast or famine with regard to work… either you’ve not nothing or you are swamped. Currently I’m edging into the ‘swamped’ department: MAD- Just got a three page job for issue #483. It’s not a movie or TV parody, but it does have a number of caricatures of TV actors involved. A fairly relaxed deadline. I’m working on the roughs right now. As always, I can’t share anything more about it until publication. Workplace poster- My usual monthly job for this client. I love these assignments… they are always different and always a challenge. This month I need to… READ MORE

Lots o’stuff on the board at the moment. As usual not much of it that I can show images of, but I did finish this poster job last night. I’m posting it to show how sometimes you get so focused on the details you don’t step back and think about the big picture until you literally step back and look at the big picture: Pencil sketch, approved by client Final color illustration…. …hmmmm….. I’m thinking the placement combined with the coloring of the stuffing coming off that falling platter might be unfortunate… yep. Better fix that. That’s better, a poo-free illustration. Whew. Disaster averted. You… READ MORE

Finally wrapping up a long run of job on top of job. One small spot to do for MAD and then a few long promised gratis pieces, and then I can almost guarantee I’ll have gotten a few more calls and the board will be busy again. As a freelancer, that is a very good problem to have. Many clients would rather I do not post the finished work prior to publication, but some don’t mind so here are a couple of pieces from the last week: Click for a closer look This is a half page spot for one of the Scholastic magazines. This… READ MORE

Busier than usual right now. I have a few jobs already “In the Can” as they say in the business, and several more on the board, including two more for MAD, one for Scholastic, the Audible job and an image for the NCS Foundation. Whew. Most I cannot share until publication, but this client doesn’t mind my sharing the process… another of those poster jobs: Initial Pencil Sketch Finished Inks Final Art- Click for a closer look READ MORE

Extremely busy on several jobs right now, and two new ones on top of that. After wrapping up pencils on a MAD job and another project today, I got a chance to do the pencils on that Sherlock Holmes audiobook project. The client wants me to create a caricature-like image of Holmes without doing an actual caricature of any of the actors who have portrayed him. Here’s what I came up with: Doing something like that isn’t as complicated as it might sound. After all, the image of Sherlock Holmes is well defined in pop culture’s visual lexicon. All I need do is design a… READ MORE

I haven’t done one of these for a while, mainly because it’s so boring to post what I’m working on but no images due to client confidentiality. Oh well, things are beginning to pile up a bit in the studio: Scholastic- Full page illustration to accompany an article for their “Dynamath” magazine. This one’s a take-off on “High School Musical”. CD Cover– Sort of. It’s actually for an virtual CD cover to accompany a collection of Sherlock Holmes audiobooks for Audible and other downloads. I should be able to post pencils and that image when I’m done with it, as well as a link to… READ MORE

Time to pay for my playtime away. I have a ton of stuff going right now: MAD Movie Parody- Crunch time for the finals, due on Friday. Sorry, can’t share that stuff for a while, but I’ll post it as soon as the issue hits the stands. Scholastic- Two jobs going right now for them, including some small caricatures of historical leaders like Peter the Great, Nicholas I, Stalin and a few others. Here’s a few of the initial studies: They like simple, cartoony style caricatures for their publication so I downplay the illustration and rendering a bit and do a MAD like job on… READ MORE

I’m back from soggy New England and the drawing board is getting stacked up… MAD movie parody- I can’t divulge any details but it’s sure to be a big blockbuster film and it’s longer than recent parodies have been at seven pages. This will be one of those parodies done in advance of the movie’s release, but as it’s a sequel that isn’t so bad. No more hints! The job also has a nice, long deadline for the end of May, so I won’t have to rush it. It’s been a full year since my last movie parody (Superman Returns) so I am looking forward… READ MORE
