On the Drawing Board

I’ve spent the last several days working on a TV parody for MAD. I did the tutorial mostly late last week and over the weekend while I was traveling in Massachusetts for prep work on our theme park operation at Six Flags New England. Since I have gotten back it’s been all MAD as it’s a short deadline. TV parodies are easier in some ways than movies and harder in others. They are easier in that there is usually a lot of reference available for TV shows, with previous seasons (if any) sometimes on DVD, fan sites on the web with screen captures and, if… READ MORE

Getting very busy again, and right now I am in Massachusetts for some prep work and interviewing for our art concessions at Six Flags New England. Self Caricature– I finally finished this new self caricature the other day, as I had grown to hate the other ones I’ve been using: Would you trust this man? I had a few purposes in mind for this. First the practical, which is to use it for a postcard I’ll be sending out after completing a job for a client as a “thank you/hope to work with you again” mailer. Second, I occasionally get asked for a self-image for… READ MORE

I’m in the final stretch of the two MAD KIDS illustration jobs for issue 7, done with the finals for the Nader job and still haven’t started the National Cartoonists Society illustration… that’s for this weekend. I also finished the poster job I posted the pencil sketch for a few days ago while waiting on some approvals and revision approvals from the folks at MAD. Here’s some stages of an area of that image: A close up of the sketch for one of the figures… The inks… The backgrounds in color, used a noise filter for the concrete… The base color for the figure, on… READ MORE

Lots of projects on the board right now but many are of the kind I cannot show sketches or finals of until publication. Workplace Poster– Another one of these jobs… this one is a fun one showing a frazzled woman running for her sanity from family and a co-worker all wanting her attention orhelp. I have to remember to add her lost shoe behind her… Revisions for Nader Museum Job– These are finally being reviewed. I had to alter the composition of one panel and change the private detective from being “too thugish” in several others. Here’s an image of the “before” and one with… READ MORE

I am deep in the middle of a TV parody for MAD, so I can’t post much of what has been ursurping my time lately. I did just finish this pencil rough for another workplace poster job: These are always fun. As I’ve said before it’s refreshing to do jobs with no caricature involved… just straight cartoon illustration. This one is obviously for a spring print release. Next week the Dreaded Deadline Demon will likely be making some appearances as I need to get the MAD job done by next Friday. READ MORE

Here are the finals for the workplace poster and the Scholastic job. Both were pretty rushed: The basketball poster is 17 x 17 inches and the Scholastic images are spots only about 4 inches wide, as you can tell from the level of detail. I just got assigned a quick turn around job for MAD and have another TV show parody in the works. READ MORE

I’ve got a TV show parody for MAD, but it’s is not due until late January, so like any good freelancer I am doing other jobs and only working on it in between. Here’s what I’ve got in the works for this week: Workplace Poster Job– Another one of these, this one for March publication. Here’s the pencil: Scholastic– Spot illustrations for an article about teenagers in ancient Rome and the differences between upper and lower class lives and expectations. Like National Geographic for Kids, Scholastic is a client that places a lot of emphasis on accuracy as far as historical clothes, hairstyles and other… READ MORE

Currently still working (slowly) on a TV parody for MAD, poster job for Marlin Co., still waiting on feedback from the Ralph Nader museum job, and the cover job. Not much new to show, but here is the rough draft of the cover illustration: This cover may not happen as a final. Sometimes designer/publishers of magazines pay to develop more than one concept and offer choices to the client. We agreed on a price up to this stage, and another if we go to final. This particular client isn’t sure they want a ‘cartoon’ cover, although I intend to paint this one instead of doing… READ MORE
