On the Drawing Board

I’ve got a TV parody for MAD in the works and I’ll be really going to town on that starting today. Here’s my latest poster illustration for the workplace poster client: Honestly, many of these poster jobs turn out so-so and I’m not always thrilled with the final results. This one I thought was a fun one and it shows in the final. Interesting scene, lots of fun, expressive faces to draw and the kind of interacting crowd and environment I always find fun to work out and render. It’s always a nice break when I do something without having a caricature involved. READ MORE

Without a MAD job on the board, I’m actually getting caught up on a bunch of jobs. Here are the finals of the “Nader vs. GM” project for the American Museum of Tort Law. These final images will be printed at the outrageous size of 36″ x 60″. Each ‘page’ has areas that will contain inset elements like an actual copy of Ralph Nader‘s “Unsafe at Any Speed” book, newspaper articles, informational text and video monitors. Thus there are ‘dead spaces’ and unfinished areas to accommodate these separate elements. I expect a final round of revisions on this, as Nader has had comments all along… READ MORE

I’m finally getting some projects out the door here at the end of the week. Here’s a couple finals of some little jobs: Workplace poster: I don’t think this one will be winning any awards or anything, but it gets the message across. I changed the figure that was bothering me and adjusted the sizes of some of the heads. I left the main guy with the wheelbarrow bigger than the others as a kind of exaggeration for humorous effect… sometimes cheating the perspective or the relative sizes of objects and people creates better focus on the important aspects of an image. This is my… READ MORE

Very busy with several jobs right now but here are the pencil roughs for two in the works: Workplace poster job: Yet another one of these, but they are always fun and the Marlin Co. is a great client. I am unhappy with the figure on the left handing the deposit slip to the teller… he is very awkward and stiff looking. I’ll have to play with that one. Personal commission: This is the President of the Minneapolis Club, who is retiring this year. This is technically a print job for his “retirement brochure” (whatever that is), but he wants the original so it’s more… READ MORE

I haven’t posted one of these in a while. I’ve been busy with computer crashes, conventions, chapter meetings and such, but that doesn’t stop the deadlines and jobs coming and going. Here’s what I’ve been working on lately: Nader Museum Job– Yep, still working on that but it is horribly late now. I was hoping to have it inked and colored by tomorrow but it looks like inked is all it will be. I may have to color it while in Orlando next week. I’ll post the finished job when done, but I have to tell you it will be hard to recognize it as… READ MORE

Things are getting crazy in the studio. After finishing the pencil roughs (and I mean ROUGHS) for the “Gray’s Anatomy” parody for MAD, I just had time to ink and color the Scholastic illustration and ink the poster job before approvals came in from MAD. Haven’t touched the Nader finals yet. Hoo boy. Here’s the final art for the Scholastic job. If the colors look garish and without a lot of contrast, it’s because I did it on purpose. The Scholastic publication this will appear in is printed on uncoated stock, and that causes the ink to soak into the paper. As a result, colors… READ MORE

My wife Anna just returned last night from a girl’s trip to the wine country in northern California, and in her absence I was trying to do both our jobs. I draw,??ᬨ‚Ć she does everything else. On the whole drawing is less complicated and the chair is more comfortable. Sadly the result of her trip is that I did about half a job on both sides of the equation, meaning I did not get all my drawing done nor did I get all the socks washed (okay, ANY of the socks washed). So, things have piled up in the studio. Here’s what I’ve got going:… READ MORE

Looks like the “Little Piranha” Minnesota Twins shirts are a go. There??ᬨ‚Ćwere some interesting issues stemming from the use of the other team logos in the art, but that’s what the Twins wanted and they have to assume liability for the use of an image they both specifically commissioned and purchased the copyrights to.??ᬨ‚ĆSounds like Major League Baseball signed off on it and there may be shirts out by the end of this weekend. Hard to believe they can put something together that fast, but anything is possible. Here are the final art images for the shirt: The back design The front (small pocket image)… READ MORE
