There have been a lot actors who have become iconic in the horror film world, but you would be hard pressed to name one who is more synonymous with the genre than the great Boris Karloff. His last film appearance was over fifty years ago, but he’s still the King of Horror, and he scared the hell out of audiences in the days where you couldn’t show blood or gore onscreen. READ MORE

Here’s another subject I received multiple suggestions to draw as part of my “horror icons” series… Peter Cushing! The Hammer horror films of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s are beloved by horror film aficionados, and Cushing starred in many of them, playing many roles like Van Helsing and Dr. Frankenstein. Incidentally as I continue with my little horror film series of sketches, I’m going to try and draw the subjects in character from one of their more famous films or shows, even if that means drawing them in some form of makeup. I’m still going to avoid doing crazy prosthetics, but it’s more interesting to add the… READ MORE

I’m sure you are horrified to see I have done another horrible caricature of another horror film legend, the diminutive in height but not in stature Peter Lorre! The original of this was snapped up by one of The Inked Stained Wretch subscribers, so it won’t be in the store. READ MORE

We continue our horror film themed “Sketch o’the Week” with a person that, while not very well known the the general public, is a beloved cult figure in the world of B-List horror film fans. Tor Johnson was a Swedish professional wrestler before became one of infamous director Ed Wood’s cast regulars, as well as appearing in many other B-films. In the comic book world, he’s equally famous as having appeared as himself in many of the early comics of my fellow MAD man Drew Friedman. READ MORE

What hump? Our sketch subject this week is pronounced “Fronkensteen”! We continue our horror film inspired sketches with a lighthearted one of the late, great Gene Wilder as “Dr. Victor Frankenstein” from the Mel Brook’s classic “Young Frankenstein”. Terrific movie, great actor, fantastic performance. Definitely one of my favorite movies of all time. READ MORE

I sometimes do themes with my weekly sketch, like my ongoing “classic rock stars” series. I think I’m going to spend the next few weeks doing a series of horror film related, starting with the legendary father of horror himself, Vincent Price. I’m going to avoid doing horror characters in heavy makeup like Pinhead or Freddy Kruger, but instead do actors who are either famous for their work in horror films or as a famous character that does not involve a lot of prosthetics. “Welcome to the Sketchbook, we got fun and games!” This week’s sketch subject is “Guns’n’Roses” frontman Axl Rose! “Appetite for Destruction” was released right in the middle of my time in art college, and got played relentlessly during a lot of all nighters when I was trying to wrap up school projects. I never did see them live though. READ MORE

The world lost a beloved comedic legend a few weeks ago with the passing of Gilbert Gottfried. I never met Gilbert but I know he was a big fan and friend of MAD Magazine. I have heard many stories of his coming into the New York MAD offices to visit with the staff and bum free copies of the magazine. His wonderful Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast was co-hosted by Frank Santopadre, who wrote numerous features for MAD for about 20 years. The outpouring of tributes for Gilbert demonstrated how loved and respected he was in the world of comedy. RIP. READ MORE
