Sketch O’The Week

Not exactly a “famous movie moment” in the category of “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn” or “Here’s looking at you, kid”, but it’s one I think of now and then… especially at certain events. “Revenge of the Nerds” was a goofy movie but it had some great characters. Donald Gibb played the dim-witted Alpha-Beta frat jock Fred “Ogre” Palowoski, who famously hated nerds. This moment from the movie plays in my head a lot during comic cons… I don’t know why. Giants of entertainment keep dropping like flies lately. Just when I thought we would be getting back to our “Famous Movie Moments” series another legend passes. Bob Newhart was a favorite in my family. I listened to his comedy albums as a kid, and I remember watching “The Bob Newhart Show” with my parents in the mid 70’s. The later show “Newhart” was a favorite of mine as a young adult in the mid to late 80s. Both those shows were great successes and long running, popular sitcoms. He also starred in a couple of short-lived, mostly forgotten shows, but those hardly diminished his legacy.… READ MORE

It’s back to our “Famous Movie Moments” series with this sketch of Mandy Patinkin as Inigo Montoya from “The Princess Bride” at the moment he finally comes face to face with the “six-fingered man”. “Hallo! My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” Trying to think up some of these iconic moments in film to do caricature sketches from I realized I did a lot of such moments in Desmond Devlin and my book of movies parodies, CLAPTRAP. This one included! Only Des wrote the parody of “Princess Bride” as a musical (i.e. “sing to the tune of…”. Here’s the page… READ MORE

We have to take a quick break from our “Memorable Movie Moments” series to pay tribute to a terrific actor who just passed away… the great Donald Sutherland. When I read of his passing I knew I was going to have to draw him… but in which role? He’s done so many memorable ones over the years. I was leaning toward his “Hawkeye” Pierce from the film version of M*A*S*H*, but settled for his turn as Sgt. Oddball from “Kelly’s Heroes”. I drew him a number of times in the MAD parodies of the “Hunger Games” films as well. Here’s a few of them: READ MORE

It’s another “Famous Movie Moment” with this week’s sketch. I have been too heavy on the macho moments featuring tough guys, guns, gangsters, or babes in bikinis with knives, so this one is all about romance! Here’s Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh from the closing scene of “Gone with the Wind”. Usually only the smartest, strongest, best looking, and best smelling of the readers of my weekly newsletter “The Ink Stained Wretch” (i.e. paid subscribers) get to see the full length video of me doing my “Sketch o’the Week” in real time. Not this week, though! I’m sharing that video for everyone on YouTube! If… READ MORE

I thought I should pick a “Famous Movie Moment” that doesn’t feature some guy or guys with a gun, and draw a female character… but in retrospect this choice might be even more male-centric than the tough guy scenes I’ve been doing. However I’m not going to apologize for getting to draw the beautiful Ursula Andress as “Honey Ryder” in her emerging from the sea scene in “Dr. No”. That scene became iconic not only in cinema but in the world of fashion. The white bikini she wore was credited for popularizing the bikini, skyrocketing sales of the style of swimwear amid the beginnings of… READ MORE

It’s time for another “Famous Movie Moment” caricature sketch! This week’s moment features a young Clint Eastwood in the 1971 film “Dirty Harry” when he utters his famous line ““You’ve got to ask yourself one question: ‘Do I feel lucky?’. Well, do ya, punk?”. The film was a huge box office success and spawned four sequels. It is also often credited as inspiring a whole genre of films centered on an “unorthodox, violent, alienated cop” theme. READ MORE

Here we go with another another “Famous Movie Moment” sketch! This week’s subject is the “I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse” scene from 1972’s “The Godfather”. Everyone knows this scene. It’s one of the most famous lines in all of cinema history, spoken by Marlon Brando‘s character Vito Corleone. The movie was nominated for ten academy awards, winning three including “Best Actor” for Brando. Want to watch me draw the above sketch, along with running commentary? What are you, a masochist?!? Well, all righty then. Become a Premium Subscriber to my weekly newsletter! READ MORE
