Sketch O’The Week

It’s another “Famous Movie Moment” with this week’s sketch. I have been too heavy on the macho moments featuring tough guys, guns, gangsters, or babes in bikinis with knives, so this one is all about romance! Here’s Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh from the closing scene of “Gone with the Wind”. Usually only the smartest, strongest, best looking, and best smelling of the readers of my weekly newsletter “The Ink Stained Wretch” (i.e. paid subscribers) get to see the full length video of me doing my “Sketch o’the Week” in real time. Not this week, though! I’m sharing that video for everyone on YouTube! If… READ MORE

I thought I should pick a “Famous Movie Moment” that doesn’t feature some guy or guys with a gun, and draw a female character… but in retrospect this choice might be even more male-centric than the tough guy scenes I’ve been doing. However I’m not going to apologize for getting to draw the beautiful Ursula Andress as “Honey Ryder” in her emerging from the sea scene in “Dr. No”. That scene became iconic not only in cinema but in the world of fashion. The white bikini she wore was credited for popularizing the bikini, skyrocketing sales of the style of swimwear amid the beginnings of… READ MORE

It’s time for another “Famous Movie Moment” caricature sketch! This week’s moment features a young Clint Eastwood in the 1971 film “Dirty Harry” when he utters his famous line ““You’ve got to ask yourself one question: ‘Do I feel lucky?’. Well, do ya, punk?”. The film was a huge box office success and spawned four sequels. It is also often credited as inspiring a whole genre of films centered on an “unorthodox, violent, alienated cop” theme. READ MORE

Here we go with another another “Famous Movie Moment” sketch! This week’s subject is the “I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse” scene from 1972’s “The Godfather”. Everyone knows this scene. It’s one of the most famous lines in all of cinema history, spoken by Marlon Brando‘s character Vito Corleone. The movie was nominated for ten academy awards, winning three including “Best Actor” for Brando. Want to watch me draw the above sketch, along with running commentary? What are you, a masochist?!? Well, all righty then. Become a Premium Subscriber to my weekly newsletter! READ MORE

It’s another “Famous Movie Moment” sketch, and this one needs more cowbell. In “The Deer Hunter”, Christopher Walken‘s character Nikanor “Nick” Chevotarevich endures a lot as a soldier and prisoner of war in Vietnam, and ends up killing himself in a game of Russian roulette in a Saigon gambling den. There’s a lot more to the story. It’s a brutal and tragic film. Walken won an Academy Award for his role. READ MORE

It’s another “Famous Movie Moment” sketch, this week featuring Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond in “Sunset Boulevard”. This is of course from the famous final scene, where the deranged Norma believes she’s making a new picture rather than being arrested for murder. She over-dramatically descends the grand staircase in her mansion mugging for the camera. Some call it a “black comedy”, but I think it’s more of a satire on Hollywood and obsession with fame. Here’s another of those famous moments in movie history that needs no preface, explanation, or context… it’s completely encapsulated in a single expression. The moment when Roy Scheider‘s “Chief Brody” first sees the shark in “Jaws” is part of movie history. In a rare departure from tradition, this original sketch is still available to buy! Jaws was released in 1975. I was nine years old, and this movie had a profound effect on me that I still remember to this day. Did I somehow see the film at only 9? I actually do not remember if I did or not. I doubt it. My parents… READ MORE

It’s another “famous movie moment” caricature sketch! This week features Al Pacino going full-on cocaine rage in “Scarface” in the “Say hello to my little friend!” scene. This is another good example of how, in the moment and with the expression/emotion being shown by the subject, a lot of the usual likeness landmarks of the subject have to be ignored. Typically when you think of Al Pacino, you think of heavy, sleepy eyelids, a long nose, a small mouth and very high and sharp cheekbones. This moment requires emphasis on the mouth and the gritted teeth, the squinted eyes, and angled back head. All that… READ MORE
