Sketch O’The Week

Sadly another cop-out this week and I am currently in route to St. Simons Island, GA to pay proper respect to the incomparable Jack Davis at the opening of his gallery show in his adoptive hometown. I predict Jack will say “I don’t deserve all this attention!” or some derivative of that about a million times during the festivities. Unlike many people who play at false modestly, he really believes this… it’s part of what makes him Jack Davis. Anyway, this is the pencil sketch of a recent Marlin workplace poster job. Inks and colored final below. Reports from Georgia to follow. READ MORE

Have to cop out this week as I am still playing catch up from Comic-Con. Here’s the pencil rough from the splash page of the parody of “Mike and Molly” from a year or two ago in MAD.¬¨‚Ć Clicky to embiggen… READ MORE

So my Doctor Who limited edition print is in production, and I’ll be debuting it next week at the start of Comic Con. I’ll have plenty of them with me to sell there, but I’ll also be taking orders here as well. There will be 250 regular, signed and number limited editions for $25 plus shipping and a “special” edition of 11 that includes the individual original inked artwork of each doctor that corresponds to his number (i.e. print #4 comes with the original of Tom Baker aka Doctor number 4), which will set you back $75 plus shipping. Just a heads up for those… READ MORE

I thought about doing a series of caricatures from the show “Game of Thrones” for a while, but I don’t know if I can anymore. After seeing Hermann Mejia‘s brilliant artwork in the parody of the show in MAD #521, I might not be able to be objective in my versions of the characters. Here’s another one from the show, though… Maisie Williams who plays Arya Stark. READ MORE

This week’s subject is “Game of Thrones” star Peter Dinklage. I’ve never read any George R.R. Martin books, but I have been watching GoT, and it’s a very entertaining show… although I must admit I am having a hard time remembering all the %$#*^ names of the characters. READ MORE

Speaking of Perry White, this week’s sketch is of actor Lawrence Fishburne. I’ve been watching the new TV series “Hannibal” this spring since I am a big fan of (almost) all of Thomas Harris‘s books, but I am giving up on the show. Fishburne’s job portraying FBI boss Jack Crawford is one of the few good things about the series, however. READ MORE

I am really swamped right now coloring a big job on the computer, so this week we are going to have to go with a quick digital warm up sketch of an easy target. Here’s Ian McKellen in his role of Gandalf from the Lord of the Rings and the recent first installment of the Hobbit films. This took about 12 minutes including the gray washes. I did a Gandalf for the SotW some years ago but never really liked that take… even though this is a loose, speed drawing I think the results are better. READ MORE
