It’s been a long time since I did a caricature of actor and nutcase Tom Cruise. Just watched the movie “Knight and Day”, which was watchable but a long way from good. I still can’t figure out where the “Day” in the title comes from… Cruise’s characters real surname is “Knight”, but I can’t think of any connection to a “Day”. Cameron Diaz‘s character’s name is June Havens. Ah well, the title makes about as much sense as the plot. READ MORE

Better late than never today. Our Sketch o’the Week subject is actor Jon Hamm from the critically acclaimed AMC show “Mad Men”. His name has been mentioned in connection with playing several superheroes including Superman, Batman, Captain America, etc. He certainly has the squint-eyed, square-jawed look. Interviews with him indicate he’s not very enthusiastic about those kinds of roles, although he had no problem playing a supervillian recently: “Lex Luthor Bailout” with Jon Hamm from Jon Hamm READ MORE

Oops… forgot to post this yesterday. Too busy. This quick warm up sketch is in honor of the passing of one of the all-time great comedic “straight-men”. Leslie Nielson, who passed away a few days ago at age 84, also was one of the greatest “career reinvention” stories in entertainment. Nielson had a long career as a protoypical handsome leading man and was often cast as the serious minded hero in movies and TV. Then in 1980 his turn in the hit parody movie “Airplane” changed his focus from drama to comedy and launched him to greater heights as a deadpan staple in spoof movies… READ MORE

I recently rewatched Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy with Number One Son Thomas who had inexplicably never seen any of the films before, and was captivated all over again by how good they are. Easily they set the bar for fantasy films. Here is a quick study of Sir Ian McKellan as Gandalf. It looks like the LOTR prequel “The Hobbit” might finally be in production in earnest. Actually this is not Sir Ian’s first appearance in the SOTW. Some years ago I did this sketch of him from the film “Richard III”: READ MORE

I’ve got a section of my website entitled the Me Gallery chock full of caricatures of me from artists all over the world. If you are interested n the funny(ish) story of how the Me Gallery began, you can read about that here. Many are from the many International Society of Caricature Artists conventions I’ve been to, but many more are unsolicited submissions from artists who just send them in to be included. I just updated it last week with dozens of recent entries, and currently there are 255 different caricatures of yours truly… if you haven’t seen this you should check it out. Given… READ MORE

This week’s sketch is of a rather obscure subject. I was catching up on some Netflix movies in the home theater the other day and I watched “28 Weeks Later”, the not so great sequel to the pretty good “28 Days Later” apocalyptic horror film. The character of Tammy was played by a young English actress with the unusual name of Imogen Poots. She had a very haunting look with heavy eyelashes/eyeliner and icy turquoise eyes, a strongly angular face shape with a distinctive nose and bruised looking lips. Quite an arresting look that inspired me to draw her. Anyway, I did this one partly… READ MORE

In honor of my Minnesota Twins clinching the American League Central Division championship last night, this week’s sketch is of one of the main reasons why they were able to do it. Slugger Jim Thome was long coveted by the Twins even as he spent most of his career playing for other teams in our division, but they eventually signed him and he’s been a godsend. 25 home runs in a part time DH role while bringing great leadership and enthusiasm as well as total class into the clubhouse. Congrats Thome and the Twins! READ MORE
