Sketch O’The Week

Well, it finally happened. Yesterday was the first day since the inception of The MAD Blog that there was no post. Not even a Dreaded Deadline Demon. I will plead exception as I was trapped in airports with delayed flights and missed connections and did not arrive back home until midnight last night. Oh well. In the meantime here’s a couple of super-fast sketches of some of the “political heads” I’m working on for this iPhone app project. I did these sitting in the airport, about 3-5 minutes each, and they pretty small at only about 2 1/2 to 3 inches tall. They will be… READ MORE

Since I’ve been remodeling the studio I’ve been going through a lot of old piles of drawings and such. I found this old rough sketch of Samuel L. Jackson that was supposed to be a preliminary for a theme park sample that I never got around to finishing. I remember liking it when I did it, but now… meh. READ MORE

Looks like I’ll have to cop out this week and post this rough pencil sketch of one of the projects I’m working on for the “sketch o’the week”. Yes, it’s another “workplace poster”. After looking at it again I think I’ll move the man down towards the bottom right just a little bit to better balance the composition. I should be able to share the finished artwork on Friday. I often get requests from readers to post rougher sketches and doodles on the blog as opposed to more meticulously drawn out pieces. Those ridiculously rendered and worked up “sketches” you see on many an art blog aren’t really sketches or studies anyway… they are more like illustrations with all the thinking and exploring worked out of them. I’m guilty of that myself, and I can see the value of seeing something a lot looser with the thought process more evident. So, with that in mind here are a few rough studies I did for a job I am working on that includes a head… READ MORE

In honor of the release of a ton of remastered Beatles albums on CD and the video game “The Beatles: Rock Band” this week’s sketch subject is the late John Lennon. Lennon is probably the most elusive of the Fab Four to try and caricature. His look changed a lot over the years, and different angles of his face seemed to reveal different and sometimes opposing observations. Was his face long and thin, or did it have a lot of roundness and baby fat to it? His nose is long and bony, but did not dominate his face. Was his chin prominent or understated? I’m… READ MORE

This week’s subject is a fellow caricaturist and ISCA member Rocky Sawyer who’s caricature I did for the International Society of Caricature Artists “Firing Squad”. The “Firing Squad” is a forum on the ISCA Message Board where members post pictures of themselves and then they are drawn by other members. A fun idea and it results in lots of caricatures in many different styles. I don’t get much time to participate but Rocky’s wife e-mailed me asking if I’d take a shot at her husband as it was his birthday, so I thought it would make an interesting sketch o’the week. The reference pic is… READ MORE

This week’s sketch subject is Brad Pitt in his role from the film “Inglorious Basterds”. I’m looking forward to seeing this movie and hope I can find the time to do it before it is gone from the theaters. READ MORE

A little something different this week… an inked sketch of a cartoon bodybuilder doing a deadlift I am working up for my trainer, Ryan Branson and his personal training business for t-shirts, etc. Needs to be line art only. READ MORE
