Sketch o’the Week

This week’s subject is the late First Lady Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy (later Onassis) drawn from a photo circa 1961. Despite being a beautiful woman she had many great features to play with including very wide set eyes and wide nose bridge, squat face with apple-round cheekbones and a small but strong chin. This week’s subject: internet loud mouth Perez Hilton, someone with even less of a reason to be famous that the heiress who’s name he uses. I am told this is a very atypical expression for him, but it was done from a short article in an entertainment magazine and seemed the best of the reference I saw. READ MORE

Today’s sketch is a quick self portrait along with an update on my surgically repaired left shoulder. For those of you not familiar with the story I tore one of my left rotator cuff muscles lifting weights while on vacation in Jamaica… I blame the metric system. I just passed 4 months since the surgery and while my doctor and physical therapist are very happy with the progress I am getting impatient. A few weeks ago I was cleared to start slowly strengthening my rotator cuff muscles, but I have a long way to go before my left shoulder will be stable enough for me… READ MORE

As promised, here is my sketch of the great Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes and Edward Hardwicke as Dr. Watson from the Granada TV series. I have been enjoying the show on DVD. Brett creates one of the greatest and most convincing portrayals of the Great Detective ever, and he deserves all the accolades he has garnered for his work. READ MORE

I had grand ambitions of doing a nice sketch of Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke as Holmes and Watson for today, but that is just going to have to wait until next week. The day is already getting away from me. Therefore, above is a “Sketch o’the Week” cop out: a very rough sketch for one of the two page spreads I did for the “Bo Confidential: The Secret Files of America’s First Dog” book for MAD I have been posting about here. If you read any of the posts I wrote detailing the story of haw fats this book was produced, you would understand… READ MORE

Click image for a closer look… Here’s a sketch I’ve been meaning to do for some time- Kate Gosselin and her little clan of money makers (Jon has abandoned them… well HER at any rate… in the caricature and in real life). The entire “Jon and Kate Plus 8” tabloid saga is so sickening that it’s become beyond sad. It’s the perfect example of how money and fame often changes people for the worse. I have no sympathy at all for the parents, as they have made their bed and at any time could have just stopped it all and gone back to focusing their… READ MORE

Once again, late but better than not at all. This is a sketch for a possible park sample of the late Michael Jackson. I decided to do one based on his look at a time when he wasn’t a punchline and was still more famous for his music than for his bizarre, and possibly criminal, behavior. READ MORE

Better late than never today… As promised, this sketch is a special one related to the trip to Colombia I have been describing this week. I was honored to get to meet one of the best caricature illustrators working today while I was in Cali. His name is Jorge Restrepo, and his work belongs in the same league as illustrators like Ismeal Roldan, Jan Op de Beeck, Hermann Mejia and even Sebastian Kr?¬?ger. Truly incredible caricature art. He was very gracious and gave me a fantastic signed copy of his book, which I have been studying intently. Restrepo (he goes by that name, rather than… READ MORE
