Sketch O’The Week

Sketch o’the Week

This week’s victim is tabloid queen and “why is this person a celebrity?” poster child Tori Spelling. Tori is having a little trouble with her breast impants these days… some rapid weight loss has caused them to migrate into new positions, kind of like the earth’s tectonic plates. The scan is a little rough as I used a borrowed scanner I was not familiar with since I am currently on the road in Massachusetts visiting my theme park operations at Six Flags New England. In fact this sketch was drawn sitting in one of my caricature booths this morning. READ MORE

Another quick one for the “Sketch o’the Week” in deference to my crazy schedule. This week I picked another actor’s face from an old entertainment magazine… a younger Benjamin Bratt. READ MORE

I am extremely busy right now and the “sketch o’the week” posts for the next few weeks may be well short of ambitious. This week’s subject is actor Ben Affleck, a quick and loose study from a very old entertainment magazine I came across in the studio. READ MORE

Okay, so after last week’s dismal failure to get a likeness of Amy Adams I had to take another crack this week. These two quick studies are much more successful. Part of the elusiveness of her face is her chin and jawline. Some angles make them seem very prominent and strong, but in reality she has a bit of a week chin and slight underbite. She has very large eyes and a sharply angled nose. This time I used several different pictures at various angles to compliment the two pics I used as the basis of these sketches. I officially wash my hands of Amy… READ MORE

Here’s another quick study attempt at actress Amy Adams. I did one a few months ago I was not too happy with. This one is certainly less of an exaggeration and still not quite on target. This was from a small picture where she is in her role of Amelia Earhart from the “Night in the Museum” sequel. Update- Here’s a scan of the reference I used. My observations keyed in on her big, round eyes and small, thin mouth. Image from Entertainment Weekly used under Fair Use. READ MORE

This week’s sketch is of recent media sensation and “Britain’s Got Talent” phenom Susan Boyle. Just in case you have been living under a rock for the last 11 days, she is a contestant in a UK talent show who created a media storm with her performance on the show on Saturday the 11th. All of England was buzzing about her during our trip to London. She is this dowdy, frumpy sort of middle aged woman who acted very “cheeky” and goofy before her number, and everyone watching was expecting the second coming of William Hung. Instead she belted out a flawless and spine tingling… READ MORE

In honor of our visit this week to London, here is England’s future king, Charles, Prince of Wales. We will be visiting Windsor castle today with friend and fellow caricaturist Steve Hearn. I’ll say hi to Chuck if I see him. READ MORE

The International Society of Caricaturist Artists does a daily sketch challenge on thier private forum where they pick a celebrity who’s birthday is that day, and a bunch of artists do a caricature of him or her. Lots of fun and some great sketches. I wish I had time to participate more, but alas that’s impossible. Yesterday as I was searching for a subject for the “Sketch o’the Week” I checked into the ISCA forum and found April 7th’s birthday target was the great film director Francis Ford Coppola, so I thought for once I’d participate via my weekly sketch. So here is my stab… READ MORE
