This week’s subject is the late, great Paul Newman. When Newman passed away last year it occured to The Lovely Anna and I that we had never seen many of the movies that made him famous and were heralded as high points of his career. I had seen “Cool Hand Luke” a few times,¬¨‚Ć “Slap Shot” (one of the greatest sports movies of all time) and a few other Newman films from the 80’s on, but not many of his older movies.¬¨‚Ć So, we made it a point to rent some of his classics. “The Sting” and “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” were the… READ MORE

Here’s another “cold” sketch where I was completely unfamiliar with the subject. When you attempt a drawing like that you are entirely dependent on that one photo reference to provide all the information for your drawing. That makes it superficial and often causes it to lack life and/or the kind of strong likeness and personality you can get by drawing someone who’s features and mannerisms you are more familiar with. This is Oscar nominated actress Amy Adams from the movie “Doubt”. I should be more familiar with her as she is a hometown girl from Minneapolis. I thought she had an interesting nose and fun… READ MORE

This week’s subject is actor Jack Black, drawn from a smallish picture out of an entertainment magazine. Black is heavy set but interestingly his face does not have a lot of fat on it. On the contrary it’s quite bony except for a suggestion of a puffy sort of underbite. He was brilliant in “Tropic Thunder”. READ MORE

Today’s sketch subject is actress Kristen Stewart of “Twilight” fame. I promised myself I would never resort to drawing any of the ridiculously overexposed “Twilight” actors for the blog, but I made an exception for Stewart when I ran across a great picture of her in an entertainment magazine. However if I ever draw Robert Pattinson without being paid by a client to do so, you can consider that one of the signs of the Apocalypse. READ MORE

This week’s sketch is a warm-up study of actress Gwyneth Paltrow. I’ve had to draw her a few times in MAD, specifically for the parody of “The Royal Tennenbaums” some years ago as well as last year in “Iron Man”. For some odd reason I find her somewhat hard to capture. She has smoky eyes with the lower lids either naturally or artifically dark. She also has a slighly wall-eyed look… by that I mean her eyes seem to look off in slightly different directions. Her nose looks different in almost every angle. She can look very glamorous and very ordinary in any given picture. READ MORE

The final “Sketch o’the Week” for 2008 is of former child star Macaulay Culkin. I saw a small picture of him in a magazine and it stuck me how creepy he looks. He retains just enough of his 10-year-old features from his “Home Alone” days to be recognizable, but he’s now nearly 30 with this thick giraffe neck and long, bony nose. The reference picture was taken in pretty bright sunlight, which left some heavy shadows that were interesting. I’m not sure if he’s even still in the entertainment business, as his appearance in the magazine was a result of the tragic death of his… READ MORE
