Continuing the theme of 80’s rock stars I liked as a kid as they look today, here’s a sketch of everyone’s favorite heavy metal elf, Ronnie James Dio. Dio had (still has, I think) this amazingly powerful voice that looked downright bizarre coming out of a 5’4″ slip of a guy who must have weighed barely 100 lbs. He gained stardom as the lead singer of Rainbow, did two studio and one live albums with Black Sabbath after Ozzy left, then headlined his own band Dio. I still love the Sabbath albums. I came across a recent picture of one of my favorite musicians from back in high school in an entertainment magazine the other day. The guy doesn’t look much different than he did in the 80’s, but I would have said he looked 25 years older than he was twenty five years ago… so maybe he just caught up to his features. This week’s subject is the late, great Paul Newman. When Newman passed away last year it occured to The Lovely Anna and I that we had never seen many of the movies that made him famous and were heralded as high points of his career.
