Sketch O’The Week

As promised, a sketch of actor Nathan Fillion. I am not really familair with the actor, as I have only seen the Firefly movie (once) and no episodes of the show nor seen him in any other programs. My observations: He has wide set eyes and a wide nose bridge. He has a somewhat flat and broad nose all the way to his nostrils. His brow is very pronounced. His jaw is square but he has a small chin, and a narrow mouth with thin lips. His eyes have an odd “walleye” sort of look like they are starting off in slightly different directions. Low… READ MORE

I had high hopes of doing a sketch here in Germany and then uploading it to the blog and having that serve as the “Sketch o’the Week”. However Landstuhl is a small town and finding a place with a scanner that would serve is proving too convoluted a process, so I am going to cheat this week and post a couple of old sketches for the “Supercapers” job I did this summer that I happened to have on my MacBook Pro. Oliver Muirhead and Tommy “Tiny” Lister Clint Howard These pencils were inked and colored and used in the semi-animated credits of the movie. I… READ MORE

Not nearly as ambitious as last week’s sketch, but here’s a study of another TV actor: Michael C. Hall, star of Showtime’s Dexter. I’ve never seen the show, but I hear it’s pretty good. Watching TV is one thing I just don’t have the time for… except for a few choice shows and whenever I am required to study a show for a MAD job. READ MORE

Here’s one I’ve been meaning to draw for a while now… some faces are just made to be caricatured. Hugh Laurie, star of the TV show “House“. READ MORE

This week’s sketch is a study of fashion maven Donatella Versace. I came across the reference photo in a tabloid article called “Plastic Surgery Shockers!” There’s not much more to say… except this could be Madonna on a bad day. READ MORE

This week’s sketch is a 10 minute warm-up study of my coincidental obsession, Christina Applegate. She’s been in the news recently because of her sudden fight with breast cancer, which it looks like she has beaten. God bless her. I say “coincidental obsession” because for some bizarre reason the Universe has chosen me to be Christina’s official publication caricature artist. I’ve related this story before after I did her latest sitcom as a parody in MAD. Back in the early 90’s I did the pencil work on a comic book series called “Married… with Children” for NOW Comics, and naturally drew Christina all the time… READ MORE

I thought I’d do something different for “Sketch o’the Week” this week. I’m a member of an international organization of caricature artists called the National Caricaturists Network, which I occasionally blog about here. Part of membership is access to a private forum where ideas, opinions and artwork are shared concerning caricatures and the business of caricatures. One of the forum sections is called “The Firing Squad”, where members post pictures of themselves and other members draw their caricature. A lot of the caricatures in my “Me Gallery” come from there. This week I thought I’d take a person from “The Firing Squad” and do a… READ MORE

I very seldom get sick but yesterday I was knocked for a loop by some kind of bizarre flu. I finished up some pencils that were a bit overdue in the morning while fighting nausea and the cold sweats, then spent the day in bed alternating between shivering and sweating. Not fun. I am bouncing back a little now. Here is a 15 minute sketch of Olympic superstar Micheal Phelps. It’s almost cheating drawing this guy, he’s so easy to exaggerate. I had heard of the “Vitruvian Man” comparison that has been reported from several sources. At 6 feet 4 inches his arms stretch, from… READ MORE
