Sketch o’the Week Part 2

August 13th, 2008 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week

I should have called the first try I posted of David Caruso “Sketch o’the WEAK”. I looked up some better reference so I could redeem myself while I took a little break this afternoon. I like this one much better. It was obvious to me after looking at a few different pictures of Caruso that his posture is a big part of his overall look. He puts his hands high on his hips with his elbows back, shoulders slumped and head craned forward and cocked to one side. That earlier sketch was actually a small one from a while ago so I could not find… READ MORE

This week’s sketch is one I abandoned half-finished. It’s supposed to be of TV actor David Caruso, but it never really “clicked” for me and I sort of gave up on it. READ MORE

Sketch o’the Week

I thought I’d try something different this week and do a sketch from a video as opposed to a photo. This week’s subject is the late action film great Lee Marvin. I’ve been really enjoying my home theater lately, thanks to a new projector, Blu-Ray player and Netflicks. Netflicks is a great deal, although it’s lifespan is undoubtably limited as within a few years HD content will be downloadable on-demand from a variety of soruces for your HDTV.. Sketch o’the Week

What? ALREADY?! Seems like I just did a bunch of these. This week’s sketch is a study of “Superbad” actor Michael Cera. This is a good example of drawing someone “cold”, or in other words having no other reference than a single picture and no other source of information. With most other subjects, especially in regards to jobs for MAD, I have seen the subjects in movies or TV shows and have some impression of them from that source. Sketch Week!- Saturday

My last subject for “Sketch Week” is a fun one. Stooges lead singer Iggy Pop is someone everybody seems to caricature… and for good reason. It’s like shooting fish in a barrel. I’ve never drawn him before but have always wanted to, so I thought he’d be a good (and easy) one to finish up the week on. I hope everybody enjoyed “Sketch Week”. READ MORE

Doing caricatures of beautiful women can be challenging, but if you look hard enough there is always something you can key in on. Scarlett Johansson might be gorgeous but she also has some very caricaturable features… squinty and small eyes set far apart, a wide and squarish nose, swollen lips, a fairly bulky jaw and chin and a small forehead. Today’s Sketch Week drawing is of director Guillermo Del Toro. I haven’t seen Hellboy 2 yet but it’s on my list. I can’t wait to see what he does with “The Hobbit“. READ MORE

Sketch Week keeps on truckin’ with this kind of small study of Anderson Cooper. Actual sketch is only a little over 3 inches tall. READ MORE
