WIP sketch of recently deceased former talk show host Merv Griffin. This one was from a few months back, just after he passed away from a picture in one of the entertainment magazines. Obviously I never finished it so I never posted it here, but I thought it might be of interest to see an unfinished sketch or two every once and a while. You can see things like explorations of form and shape with the sketchier lines, and how the small suggestion of shadows and just the beginning of the rendering still produces a strong likeness if the initial drawing is strong. A good… READ MORE

Massachusetts senator and easy caricature target Teddy Kennedy. Drawing this guy is like shooting fish in a barrel. I’ve been doing a lot of political studies in the sketchbook recently because election years are always big for caricature illustrators. Art directors love caricatures of politicians, and there is no shortage of news stories, features and editorial pieces on politicians in the 15 months or so leading up to a major election. READ MORE

Singer, songwriter and absolute train wreck Amy Winehouse. This woman makes Courtney Love look like Miley Cyrus. Self destructive behavior seems like a prerequisite for rock stars. I did this quick ink sketch yesterday as part of a header graphic for a column I’m kind of doing in a new cartoonist’s magazine called Stay Tooned!, published by John Read. I say “kind of doing” because John will be picking and choosing some of my Sunday Mailbag questions and answers for the column, and I will edit and possibly expand them for his magazine. John describes it as a “paean to the practitioners of cartooning”. I envision it as having shades of Hogan’s Alley and Cartoonist’s Profile, except his standards for contributors must be exceptionally low if I’m involved. Still, R.C. Harvey will… READ MORE

A tiny sketch of Ugly Betty star Michael Urie. I had to write his name next to him so I remembered it. The Lovely Anna likes this show… I don’t get it myself. This sketch is only about 3 inches tall in the sketchbook. READ MORE
