MADness #63: The Sheen Lantern!

January 16th, 2023 | Posted in MAD Magazine

By Oa, It takes a lot of willpower to keep doing these lame looks back at my work for MAD Magazine, but Mondays are already the worst day of the week so let’s just roll with it. This week we have a peek at another “MAD’s 20 Dumbest People, Events and Things of…” the year, this time 2011. That was the year Charlie Sheen went crazy, getting booted off his hit TV show “Two and a Half Men” and raving about tiger blood, wizards, and “winning” while looking more and more like a crackhead. MAD took notice and he made the MAD 20 with this… READ MORE

MADness #62: Punitive Damages!

January 9th, 2023 | Posted in MAD Magazine

All rise! The kangaroo court is in session! It’s a new year I am still schelpping out the old crap as we continue our long and boring cross examination of the crimes against cartooning that was my work for MAD magazine. This week we look back at a video game spoof called “Punitive Damages: A Game of Supreme Justice”, written by my CLAPTRAP cohort Desmond Devlin and first appearing in MAD #512, December 2011. This piece will live in infamy with me because, all self-deprecating comments aside, I consider it the worst thing I ever did for the magazine. It had nothing to do with… READ MORE

MADness #61: Parks and Rec!

December 19th, 2022 | Posted in MAD Magazine

It’s time for another MAD Monday stop on the long, exhausting and utterly pointless trek through my work at MAD Magazine. This week we have a look at another TV parody, “Parks and Recreation” written by the inimitable Arnie Kogen and first appearing in MAD #511, October 2011. This was the last parody in what was, for me, the longest run of consecutive issues of MAD featuring a full movie or TV parody with my art. If you count “The Wizard of O” (and I do) this is eight issues in a row with a “continuity” drawn by me in it. A personal best. I… READ MORE

MADness #89: Green Lantern!

December 5th, 2022 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Here we go with another pathetic peek back at my work for MAD Magazine. This week is a look at one of the more unique movie parodies I’ve done for MAD, “Green Lantern” from MAD #510, August 2011. written by Desmond Devlin. It was not unique because of the film, but because of a rare instance of the MAD editors cutting a gag of mine, some experimenting on my part with my process, and a bizarre request for a cameo. First, the MAD edit: This was my pencil rough for the splash page: The “finger” ring construct was my gag. It’s not very often the… READ MORE

MADness #88: Modern Family!

November 28th, 2022 | Posted in MAD Magazine

It’s another MAD Monday, which means it’s also time for another step on our long and excruciating wander through my work at MAD Magazine! This week we look at another TV parody, this time of the Emmy winning comedy “Modern Family”, written by Arnie Kogen and first appearing in MAD #509, June 2011. My very first job in published work was in 1990 for a comic book company called NOW Comics doing pencils for a title called “Married… with Children”, which was based on the popular FOX TV show. I did about 600 pages of that title and it’s related comic book specials, so I… READ MORE

MADness #87- Mad Men!

November 14th, 2022 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Break out the bourbon and light up your smokes, it’s time for another look back at the work I did for MAD magazine! This week we revisit one of my all time favorite parodies I ever did for the magazine, a spoof of the TV series “Mad Men”, written by Arnie Kogen and first appearing in MAD #508, April 2011. Why is this one of my favorites? First off, I loved the show so it was not a chore watching episodes and getting to know the characters, which helps a lot of both the caricatures and coming up with insider gags. Second, the show was… READ MORE

MADness #85: GLEE!

October 24th, 2022 | Posted in MAD Magazine

THE HALLS ARE ALIVE, WITH THE SOUND OF MUSIC (…AND THE SMELL OF ARMPITS)!! Get ready to duck those flying slushies, Gleeks! We’re back at it this week with another tone deaf performance of a moldy oldie of a look back at my work for MAD Magazine. Today we revisit MAD‘s parody of the TV show “Glee”, written by the great Arnie Kogen and first appearing in MAD #506, December 2010. This show was a favorite of my wife, The Lovely Anna, and my kids. In fact this parody is rife with cameos of people I know, including my kids in the splash page. On… READ MORE

MADness #84- The Wizard of O!

October 10th, 2022 | Posted in MAD Magazine

There’s no place like Monday! There’s no place like Monday! It’s time for another trip over the rainbow with another look back at my work for MAD. Today we drop in on one of the most unique pieces I ever did for the magazine. Is it a movie parody? Yes.. sort of. Is it a political piece? Yes, definitely. Does it contain a ridiculous number of caricatures of political reporters, commentators and satirists? That would be a big “you betcha”. We are not in Kansas anymore! Desmond Devlin wrote this six pager called “The Wizard of O” for MAD #505, Oct 2010. This was a… READ MORE
