Daily Coronacature- Nathan Fillion!
Here’s my take on Nathan Fillion, drawn as Captain Mal from “Firefly”. Original available as always in the Studio Store. I have a story about meeting Nathan Fillion. Actually it’s a story about The Lovely Anna meeting Nathan Fillion, although I did too. This happened back in August of 2015 when Anna and I drove to Chicago for a comic book convention. Nathan was one of the big stars appearing at the con.
The Lovely Anna loves Nathan Fillion. She has seen every episode of “Castle” multiple times. She has seen all the episodes of “Firefly”. I think she’s even seen “Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog”… at least she doesn’t mind when I dress up as Captain Hammer. Anyway she got really excited about maybe getting a ticket to meet him… until we saw how much they went for. I think it was over $100, and she’d heard stories about the “Celebrity Cattle Chute” format for meeting and taking pics with celebs at these Wizard World shows… you don’t really get more than a few seconds with them. By the way I am not passing judgement on that. It is what it is and giving literally thousands of fans a chance to shake hands, get a signature, and take a pic with one of their favorite celebrities is worth whatever people are willing to pay for that… and more power to them. However, since we were travelling all the way down there to try and MAKE money she decided she didn’t need to meet Nathan Fillion.
We arrived in Chicago and got our booth all set up. We actually had a corner table that year and since we drove and did not have to ship everything we had quite a setup, with some stacked grid boxes like mini-tower displays. It’s a lot of work to set that all up. We were all ready and the floor was going to open in about 45 minutes when Anna spilled a bunch of water all over inside the booth floor. She ran off to get some paper towels while I was setting up my drawing stuff.
I did not know this but apparently they let VIPs onto the floor early so they can walk around without getting mobbed, so there were some people circulating around. I was sitting down unpacking my drawing stuff when some ladies walked up and complimented my work. I said thanks very much. Then one of them asked if I’d “ever drawn him before,” and pointed to someone who was standing behind one of the display grids, who I could not see.
I leaned over and Nathan Fillion was standing there smiling at me.
I immediately thought that Anna was never going to believe that this happened while she was gone from the booth getting paper towels. I stood up and shook his hand, and started to tell him my wife was not going to believe this when Anna walked up with all these paper towels.
She saw who was standing there, stopped in her tracks, and her mouth hung open like a Hanna-Barbera cartoon character.
She started stammering and a bunch of barely intelligible babble came out of her. Stuff like “OHMYGODI’MLIKEYOURBIGGESTFANWELLMAYBENOTYOURBIGGESTTHEREMIGHTBEBIGGERONESBUT
I’MAREALLYBIGFANANDIVESEENALLYOURSHOWSANDICANTBELEIVEYOUARESTANDINGHERE
BLAHBLAHBLAH”.
Nathan smiled and nodded and listened for a few seconds and then stopped here by taking her hand and asked “What’s your name?”
“Anna,” she replies.
“Well, it’s nice to meet you, Anna.” He said. “Would you like a picture with me?”
Then this:
A very nice gentleman. It’s great when celebrities know how to handle their fame instead of letting their fame handle them.

Awesome story Tom! This made me smile. Great drawing today as always. Seems like every line has a purpose.
