Dud The Lousy Hunter
May 11th, 2007 | Posted in MAD Magazine
As promised, here’s a quick sneak peek at some of the art from the parody of “DOG the Bounty Hunter” in this month’s MAD:

A few panels from the parody…
Surprisingly I rather enjoyed the show itself. You have to admire a man who places so much emphasis on his family and God as “Dog” does… even if the people he’s chasing are about as dangerous as your average librarian. TV also works magic on making someone look bigger than life… DOG looks like a massive guy but according to his rap sheet, he’s a towering 5 foot six inches tall.

usually it’s the dog capturing people, but you did a great job capturing HIM! the show explores some of hawaii’s bad problems, but people love him here.
I’m dying to find out what Ozzy is saying. And why he has a sandwich. I’ve never seen the show, but I gather he does the theme song.
Great stuff, Tom!
Yeah, you can’t help liking the guy. I heard last year that his daughter died….the day before his wedding, so as buffoonish as the guy looks, the guy’s been through the ringer.
Yes, Ozzy does the theme song… and that’s a “bat” sandwich. I’m hoping that gag doesn’t need explanation.
Looking GREAT Tom! Yet another masterpiece! Way to go! The composition is really strong and the colors are very cool!
In one drawing, you have different visual jokes—the bat sandwich, the Acme boxing glove gun, the methheads sign, Where’s Waldo, etc. Are all these jokes things you come up with on your own on the fly, or does the writer leave you notes with the dialogue. And if you come up with these on your own, then shouldn’t you be paid twice–as an artist and as a writer?
Thanks, everybody.
Larry- All the gags you mentioned except the ‘Diamondhead/Meth head” are mine, as well as a bunch of others.
Doing art for MAD is not about just drawing. It’s about adding humor on a visual level. That might be using funny images or adding visual gags. No extra pay, sadly.
