Here’s a little video from our recent visit to Cuba, courtesy of Lex Fajardo, creator of Kid Beowulf, artist/director at the Schulz Studios and one of our group of traveling cartoonists. It’s a short clip of me and one of the Palante! cartoonists drawing one another.

Follow this link to read Lex’s thoughts on the trip.

You can also listen to another cartoonist from our trip, MythTickle‘s Justin Thompson, talk about the experience on the latest episode of the podcast Comics: Coast to Coast.

I think we have a tie.

This might sound like a strange question, but did you notice any national differences in drawing caricatures, or cartooning in general? I’m kind of thinking of the way a lot of American editorial cartoonists have a similar look (probably influenced by Jim Borgman) which is quite different from their UK counterparts.

Don’t know if this has been asked before, but I first noticed the bundle of material surrounding your pencil. I’m constantly looking for ways to pad my pencils to alleviate aching finger joints from repetitive stress. Any ideas, suggestions, techniques welcomed on this topic.

Jim- The stuff I wrap my pencils with is called “pre-Wrap” or “Sports Wrap”. It is soft foam material that comes in a roll. It has no adhesive on it… just a roll about 2 inches wide of this foam wrap. Its most common use is to wrap an injured ankle, wrist or other sports-related injury prior to taping the area up for support. It provides a soft cushion for gripping and also wicks away moisture from your hand keeping it dry and reducing calluses. Great stuff, and it’s cheap. You can get it at most sports store and drugstores in the area where they sell ace bandages and other first aid. Rolls are about $1.50 or so.

    Thanks, Tom!

I happen to own some, so I’ll dig it up and give it a try.
