Elementary, My Dear Watson
The other day I posted a picture of my dog on my Facebook page, and someone asked me if I’d ever drawn him. Oh, yes. He has made cameo appearances in many of my illustrations, although I don’t think I’ve snuck him into MAD yet.
His name is Dr. Watson, and he’s an almost 3 year old Lhasa Poo (Lhasa Apso/Poodle mix). He’s my studio buddy, and he hangs out with me while I work all day (and sometimes all night). He really is that cute… he looks like a toy. Here he is hamming it up in a few illustrations of mine in the last year or so:
That third one is only a loose interpretation, but the others are definitely him. There are other examples. In my defense, I still have drawn my kids more times than the dog . . .¬¨‚Ć but it’s getting close.
This is what Watson looks like at 3 AM in the studio…
Just got a haircut!
I know everybody thinks they have the cutest dog in the world, but come on…. this is one cute dog.

Adorable, Holmes!
That is awesome! Definitely a cute dog.
I have two Shih Tzus who are my studio buddies. Like Dr. Watson, they’ve made it into a few paintings. One evening, the model was late showing up at our weekly life drawing session, and both of the dogs got up on the model stand on their own. I think it was probably because it was the least crowded and most comfortable spot in the studio, but what the heck, they were posing for us! Too bad I can’t attach the picture.
I am sure there’s a market for caricatures of owners and their pets. Do you have a tutorial for
drawing animals?
And, yes, Dr. Watson is cute!
Nope, no tutorial from me on drawing animals. It’s all just drawing, and each animal has specific anatomy that you just need to pay attention to so you get it right.
Hey Tom really nice dog. hes really a star on your art. Take care.
