From The Freelance Files: Corporate Caricatures
While I don’t have time to do many personal commission outside of the comic-cons I work, I do sometimes do caricatures for corporate clients for executives that might be retiring or being honored in some way. What’s the difference between a personal caricature and one done for corporate client? Two things actually. One is that the subject is generally unaware of the project and I am not subjected to being art directed by the person whom the drawing depicts, and therefore avoid any complications brought on by vanity or unrealistic self-image. The second reason is plain and simple… money. I am comfortable charging corporate clients the type of rates I’d get for doing the same thing for a publication or other main media. I have a hard time asking for that kind of dough for a caricature of grandma for her birthday.
Here’s a sampling of a few I’ve done over the years of people you don’t know. I’ve actually done quite a few more than this, but most tend to be original paintings as opposed to digital, and I don’t generally scan them before sending them off:
This one is ink and wash, not digital

Looks like you’re keeping busy, Tom. 🙂
Tom! I took your workshop in Pittsburgh. You demo sketched and inked a Spock which we all stool around and drooled. Is your normal method of adding color in photoshop?
Hi Greg! Yes, these days 99% of my inked line work art is colored digitally. I only drag out the real paints when I need to have a color original for some reason.
