Goodbye 2019…

I’m not sure if I am glad 2019 is over because a lot of good things happened for me professionally in 2019, but a lot of the bad stuff that happened is going to continue to impact things in 2020.
The Good Stuff!
- I made a living as a freelancer (always #1)
- My work appeared in every issue of MAD Magazine (10 years straight)
- Spoke/taught at NCSFest in Huntington Beach, CA
- Taught workshops all over including Amsterdam and Switzerland
- Was a guest speaker at Eurocature 2019 in Vienna, Austria
- The whole Once Upon a Time in Hollywood/Tarantino thing
- Started doing work for the UK’s VIZ Comic
- Appeared on the “Svengoolie” Show!
- Patton Oswald made my name a verb
- Did my 10th printing of “The Mad Art of Caricature!”
- Appeared at Comic Cons in Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, Anahiem, New York, and Detroit
- Was a guest speaker at Pixar
The Bad Stuff…
- My pal Bill Morrison being fired as VP and Editor of MAD Magazine
- Almost everyone else leaving or being fired from the MAD Staff
- MAD going to reprint format with SOME new content
- MAD cutting movie and TV parodies
The “good” list outweighs the “bad” list by a large margin, but the bad stuff is going to affect my 2020 and beyond since 100% of it has to do with what’s happening to MAD Magazine. I don’t know if I’ll continue to have work in every issue of MAD. I do know the days of 6-7 page parodies are over (at least for now). The work I’ve done for the last couple of issues are two page features. I’m happy to do them, of course, but I was just getting the hang of those movie and TV parodies! Ah well.
On to 2020! I’ve got a few new irons in the fire. We’ll see what the future holds!

Happy New Year! Thank You for your help!
Tom, your positives more than outweigh the negatives (All MAD issues–using either definition…LOL). You didn’t add the positive of affecting all of us who have an awesome caricature of ourselves, done by one of the best caricaturists around. I’m sure avenues will open up even wider with all your accomplishments. We all knew at some point MAD was going down, but you’re on your way up…even higher than you would have thought. Happy New Year to you and yours!
Thanks David! I’m plenty positive about the future
Happy New Year Tom, I hope it will be the best one yet!!!!
Maybe it’s time for someone to produce a TV/Movie parody magazine. That was always my favorite part of Mad anyway. Maybe a TV show and a movie in each issue. Just thinking.
Do you think Mad will go back to being a comic book? That way it would be JUST movie and TV parodies, which, IMO, was the highlight of the magazine.
Not a chance.
Tom, wish you for this new year alsof the best. In drawing, with family, health. Let it be also a good year.
Still thanks for the workshop in Amsterdam, and the poster you send. Marvellous…!
Greetings,
Jef De Sutter
