Goodnight Batcave Release Date Moved Up
Prototype cover of Goodnight Batcave
In an unusual break from the tradition of publishing, the book Goodnight Batcave that I illustrated with writer Dave Croatto, is going to be released two weeks earlier than previously announced. The release date was originally set for Nov. 8th, but its debut was moved up to Oct. 25th. The books pre-order page on Amazon.com now reflects that new date.
If you are confused by the caption under the preview cover art above, let me explain. That is not quite the actual cover art for Goodnight Batcave, but I understand that is not so unusual.
I don’t do a lot of book illustration. In fact if you do not count my self-published The Mad Art of Caricature, I’ve only done the art for two other books, Bo Confidential and The Bro Code for Parents, and that latter I was not involved with any of the promotion or press. Apparently when you solicit the release of a book, especially an art-heavy book like Goodnight Batcave, advanced images are just that… advanced or “prototype” images. They can change or be tweaked before the final product goes to press. Considering the solicitation of books often takes place a year before they hit bookshelves, that is understandable.
Anyway, the cover you see above got “tweaked”, as did the two double page spreads that were also part of the original press release. Not by much. Batman himself changed style a bit, and a couple of little touches were added, but it is a little different. Unfortunately I can’t show you the final artwork until or unless MAD/DC Entertainment decides to release more advanced images. All I can tell you is the tweaked cover is much funnier.

This book should be fun. It might even be helpful in terms of momentum, that an all new Batman animated story is coming out Oct. 11, on digital HD, and a Blu-ray combo pack out on Nov. 1st. “Batman – return of the Caped Crusader” with the voices of Adam West, Burt Ward, and Julie Newmar. I saw the trailer with Batman and Robin laying on a large frozen dinner tray, heading into an oven. At least I think all that happened.
