L.A. Comic Con Appearance
Drawing for MAD isn’t exactly doing Batman for DC or Spider-Man for Marvel, so I am hardly on anybody’s short list of special guests at comic book conventions. In fact, the few times I have appeared at them, the typical exchange usually goes:
“What do you draw?”
“I draw for MAD Magazine”
“Oh… can you do a sketch for me?”
“Sure, I could draw your caricature… or a picture of Alfred E. Neuman, or…”
“Draw a sexy Batgirl with big boobs!!”
I go to the Minnesota FallCon every year, but not many other places. Every once and a while I get a gracious invitation to appear at a comic convention, and that will be the case early next month.
On November 5th I will be a guest at the L.A. Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention being held at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Center. It’s a one day event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and I’ll be there until about 4:00. I’ll have lots of tearsheets of my MAD work, copies of MAD (I hope, if the MAD guys come through as they usually do) to give away and sign, several original MAD pages I’ll be asking outrageous prices for and be doing caricatures and sketches for a pittance. Charging for sketches always feels cheesy to me, but it’s expected and unless you charge something you have a pile of sketchbooks to work in one hour into the show, and no time to talk with people.
I’m thrilled to have been invited by Bruce and the crew at the L.A. Comicbook and Science Fiction Convention. It should be fun and if anybody reading this is comes to the show be sure and stop by to say hello. In the meantime I have to practice my sexy Batgirl drawings…
Here’s the L.A. Comicbook and Science Fiction Convention website with all the information about the show.
According to writer extraordinaire Mark Evanier, longtime MAD artist and certifiable cartoon genius (or perhaps just ‘certifiable’) Sergio Aragon?¬©s will be a guest at the L.A. Con! Mark will be there are well. There is nothing more fun than spending time with Sergio… the man is a true gem. Mark is no slouch, either. David Carradine I don’t know about, but if there are any samuri swords nearby I will not be cracking any “grasshopper” jokes.
