MAD #10 Cover Revealed!
Bloody-Disgusting.com just released an exclusive look at the cover of MAD #10, art by Jason Edmiston. That link also has a peek at Sergio Aragonés‘ “A MAD Look at Alfred Hitchcock Movies”, all a part of their October “Halloween” issue. The issue hits newsstands comes out Oct. 8th. I have two pieces in this issue.
There are a lot of rumors going around that MAD is ceasing publication after this issue. That is false, or at least incorrect if your definition of “publication” is that a magazine with the title “MAD” on it is going to be printed and available to purchase/read. That is most definitely going to be the case. There will be a MAD #11 out in December, and so on.
However, this IS the last issue of MAD that will feature all new content in it. My understanding is each issue starting with #11 will have a new cover, a new Sergio’s “A MAD Look at…”, and new Spy vs. Spy, plus maybe another new piece or two of some kind, but the majority of the contents will be reprints of classic material. #11 will feature the “MAD 20” which will presumably be all new stuff. If you are a fan of the movie and TV parodies that have been a staple of the magazine for most of its existence, you are out of luck, There will be no more new movie or TV parodies, that has very specifically been axed.
So, if your definition of “publication” is a MAD magazine filled with all new art and writing, that will not be happening after issue #10… at least not for the foreseeable future.

Save the Mad! A rally cry for those who want a good satire magazine able to thumb its nose at the world, without consequences! But the fact that it will continue, although without totally new material is ok. For new readers – it will all be new material! So kudos are in order! What Mad worry?
It’s great if there’s new Sergio and Spy vs. Spy added, but a 4-6 page TV/movie parody every month would make the magazine worthwhile for me even if the rest was reprint. Without that, I dunno.
I’m 59. Been a subscriber/reader since I was 12. Why stop now?
With respect, admiration and apologies to Tom and MAD I think a “Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions” response is needed, which in this case I call “A Snappy Answer to A Stupid Situation”…
“So…. Let me get this straight, so to speak…. There will be no more new movie or TV parodies??? Looks like you’re out of a job, you schmuck!”
Not very original I know, but neither are the future MADs!
I have to agree with Rod Keith. A new TV or movie parody in each issue makes continuing to buy MAD an easy and sensible decision, even if nothing else in the issue is original. Those parodies, for me at least, is what made MAD MAD and without them I’m not sure that I can truly enjoy the magazine as I once did.
However, going back to John McCann’s comment, I bought my first issue in 1980 and I haven’t missed an issue since. It would be quite difficult to quit cold turkey.
This whole ordeal has left me quite conflicted.
No licensing potential with TV and film parodies. They are purely for the enjoyment of reading, which is less important to the publishers apparently.
That surprises me. I thought that a Mad with a compilation of parodies of a franchise with a brand new on at the end (like has been done with Harry Potter from a few years back) would be a good way to reuse old material. Infact, that exact special was the one that got me back into Mad.
An original movie or TV parody would be something to look forward to.
Sad…not that there’s going to be very little new MAD material, and NO movie or TV parodies, but that my wife and I sat through the new IT for nearly 3 hours….ECCHHH! The cover art of Pennywise in the toilet, is really quite appropriate!
