MAD Flashback Week: 80’s Cover!

I’m still in Amsterdam having just taught a workshop last weekend and then traveling on to Switzerland for another this weekend, so this week is going to be a “MAD Flashback” week where I’ll post looks at some stuff I’ve done for the magazine and for other projects for the MAD guys and DC comics.
For a few years MAD published these perfect-bound “bookazines” that revolved around different themes and contained reprint material. I did a few covers for these including this one for “MAD Spoof’s the 80’s”. Everything was done digitally on this except for the spot caricatures on the squares, which I did in pen and ink and then placed on the image using some Photoshop trickery to create the appropriate perspective for each. Here’s a gallery of the spots:
Darth Vader Tom Cruise Spuds MacKenzie Siskel and Ebert Tom Selleck Ronald Reagan Phil Donahue Oprah Eddie Murphy Michael Jackson Crocket and Tubbs Roger Kaputnik Joan Collins Hulk Hogan Mikhail Gorbachev Matthew Broderick E.T. Cyndi Lauper Cabbage Patch Kid Jennifer Beals Gary Coleman Alf Dan Aykroyd

You omitted Chunk from “The Goonies.” (lower left corner) Presumably because of some bitter behind-the-scenes Richmond/Chunk feud that’s still too painful to talk about.
Ha. Just couldn’t find a scan of that one. Chunk and me are like this 🤞
So so good Tom. Apologise if this causes offence, but your style here reminds me of a cross between Mort and Angelo. Classic MAD!
