MADness #13: Their Team & Your Team!
My next assignment for MAD appeared in issue #416, May 2002. It was a return to a sports-themed feature called “Their Team…& Your Team…” written by John Prete.
I started for MAD at almost exactly the time it switched to a color format. In fact a big part of why I started getting work from them was that they were planning the switch to color and I did my own digital coloring. In the 20 years I did work for the magazine, I only ever did four jobs in black and white. This was one of them.
This was, however, the first black and white job I did AFTER MAD had switched to color. I am still unsure why they wanted this job done in black and white, but it’s possible they didn’t want any colors that could be identified as a certain team’s colors for the general gags. Maybe it was because some of the other work in the magazine was still being done in black and white, and they wanted some other B&W pieces here and there as well. I was never told and no one seems to remember for sure.
Next Monday we return to the world of movie parodies, with a look at my second fim spoof for MAD and the continuation of my role as MAD‘s resident Gene Hackman/Owen Wilson artist.

I found some Jack Davis’ semblance in some details, specially the lower left block (the ‘hail mary’). I can stop admiring your art.
