It’s yet another thrilling episode of the excruciatingly dull chronological crawl through my work in MAD, featuring my art for the two pager “A MAD Peek Behind the Scenes on the Set of The Hulk.” This piece was written by “MAD‘s MADdest Writer” Dick DeBartolo and “Slightly Disturbed MAD Editor” Greg Leitman. It appeared in MAD #431, July 2003.

I did several of these “MAD Peek Behind the Scenes on the Set of…” features, and they were all pretty much the same overhead shot looking down on the set of a TV show or movie with caricatures of the cast as well as set workers, etc. and various pods of people interacting with scripted gags, plus a lot of “chicken fat”.

This particular scene is full of characters relating to “green” in some way. Either their name is “Green” or “Greene”, they ARE green, or they are in a band/on a team with “green” in the name. Dick and Greg’s script for this is long gone, but I think I remember it contained a list of possible cameos so many of those depicted are likely their suggestions. I can’t remember which I may have come up with. I did draw a few people I knew into this one. The two guys between the tank and “Sam-I-Am” are both caricature artists. I can’t remember the last name of the guy on the left, but his first name is Michael. The other guy is Seattle based caricaturist Sam Klemke. The two guys in the upper right are two more caricaturists I know, Jerry “Kidd” Cardona from Texas and Rick Wright from Baltimore. The guy with the menu by Oscar the Grouch on the far right is Don “Duck” Edwing. I have no idea why I drew Duck in this, nor why he’s the guy reading the “Tavern on the Green” menu, but I suspect maybe Dick asked me to include him as part of some inside joke. This was almost 20 years ago.

Joining us next Monday for another exciting chapter, with a return to movie parodies! As one of the charcaters in this spoof famously says (a lot)… “Ah’ll be Bock”.

This article reappeared in one of the current reprint issues. “Militant Lesbian Boy” was renamed “Militant Thespian Boy” out of an inordinately abundant sense of caution.

Either way, Militant Lesbian/Thespian Boy remains valuable AT&T I.P. to be mined!
