MADness #81: Board Game Movies!
It’s time to roll the dice and move the around the board with this week’s look back at my work for MAD Magazine. Here’s a second piece I did for MAD #502, Jan 2010, written by Jacob Lambert. This two pager was a response to the rash of movies based on board games.
This was the first time I used my “colored line” technique on a MAD job. I had just figured out how to do it and had done a couple of freelance illustration jobs using it, but I had never had the occasion to use it for MAD. The technique starts with the same approach I used for most MAD jobs… pen/brush inked linework on bristol, scanned and then colored in Photoshop. The difference is that instead of leaving the lines black, I color the lines as well. The lines are colored based on the areas they are providing the contour for. For example, the lines around a Caucasian face are a kind of reddish-brown color. The lines around a blur short are a darker blue, etc. This results in a softer, more painted look and not a colored comic book feel. I thought it would work well for what are supposed to be a mash up of a movie still and the illustrated cover of a board game.
Here’s the pencils and a closer look at the finals:
Game over for another week, and once again we lose! Toon in next week for another pulse-pounding look back at my MAD work with another two-fer… a Fundalini piece and a return to the world of TV parodies!
