MADness #83- Toyota Story!
It’s Monday! That means it’s time to race headlong into another look back at the car wreck that was my work for MAD Magazine. This week’s MADness is a look back at a three pager my CLAPTRAP cohort Desmond Devlin and I did for MAD #504, August 2010. Back then Toyota was in some hot water for an “unexplained acceleration” issue with their card that resulted in a lawsuit and investigation. This was a play on that with the Toy Story gang.
Originally I just did a movie poster spoof that was a little different than the above for the MAD website, but then they expanded it into a short story for the actual magazine. Trying to get the look of the Pixar characters was time consuming. I went straight from pencils to digital painting with this… no inking at all.
Both of the above sketches was actually for the movie poster spoof that appeared on MAD’s website. The editors had me revise it further for the magazine feature version, including making the car more anthropomorphic, busting up Bo Peep more and a few other tweaks. Here are the story pages:
I used a slightly different technique for the “Toy Story 4” spoof in CLAPTRAP. I did ink that one but colored the lines to create a painted look:
That’s it for another pointless look back at my MAD work. Toon in next week when we go somewhere over the rainbow where we visit truly brainless, heartless and cowardly characters… American political pundits!
