April 3rd, 2018 | Posted in Monday MADness

The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Research Center at Ohio State University is putting on a huge MAD exhibition entitled “Artistically MAD: Seven Decades of Satire” from May 5th-Oct 21st 2018 in the Robinson Gallery. Here’s their description:

Harvey Kurtzman’s brainchild made its debut as a comic book in 1952 before switching to a magazine format in 1955.  Over the ensuing years, MAD has featured artwork by many of the most talented cartoonists in the industry. This comprehensive exhibition will showcase original drawings and paintings by all of the top MAD contributors, including Bill Elder, Jack Davis, Wally Wood, Norman Mingo, Al Jaffee, Serio Aragonés, Don Martin, Mort Drucker and Tom Richmond.  There will also be displays of vintage MAD magazines and memorabilia branded with the gap-toothed mug of its iconic mascot, Alfred E. Neuman. Curated by Brian Walker.

OPENING RECEPTION AND CELEBRATION: Join us on Saturday, May 5th from 4 – 7:30pm for the opening reception and celebration of Artistically MAD: Seven Decades of Satire! Featuring presentations by legendary MAD cartoonist Sergio Aragonés, collectors Glenn Bray and Grant Geissman, exhibit curator Brian Walker, and MAD editor Bill MorrisonFREE and open to the public.

I will not be there, unfortunately… I will be teaching a workshop in NYC that weekend. I do have something in the exhibition, though… all seven original pages from my recent parody of “Stranger Things”, plus the cover inks. I’ll be visiting sometime this summer because… DAMN.

I also did the art seen above for the exhibition promotional materials.

This is going to be an amazing exhibit, with originals from the Kurtzman comic book days through the latest issue. Too many incredible comic artists to list here, you’ll just have to go see it. The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Research Center is located on the OSU campus in Sullivant Hall, 1813 N. High St.
Columbus OH 43210. Visit their website for specific hours, etc.

Do you think there’s a possibility that this could be a travelling exhibit?

Holy potrzebie! I live in Columbus! A decade or so ago I saw an exhibition of MAD original art at the Columbus College of Art and Design, and it blew my mind. So many fascinating details that were never meant to be reproduced in the final printed piece. And Aragones, Morrison & Geissman (“Chuck Mangione Live at the Hollywood Bowl” is one of my favorite albums) at the FREE opening reception? OH MY GOD! Thanks for the heads-up, Tom! If you need a chauffeur when you come to Columbus, I’ll slavishly schlep you around!
