More Live Caricatures

August 7th, 2008 | Posted in General

Here are a few of the ones I did working at the theme park on Monday. My camera ran out of battery after just a few.

You have to love this next one:

Grandma rolls this napping baby up in a stroller and insists I draw a caricature of her. I explained I’ll have to draw her sleeping, and he replies “That’s what I want.” <groan>. Ooooookay. The customer is always right! So I did the one above in about 6 minutes. Then I signed it “Steckley”, so just in case it ever gets seen by anyone I know they’ll blame my buddy Ed Steckley and not me. I’ve got a lot of “Steckley” drawings floating around!

Great caricatures Tom! I loved the “Steckley”-looks like a panel in a Mort Drucker MAD cartoon!
BTW? Is the kid playing baseball and swinging righty holding the bat wrong part of the gag?

  2. The old sleeping baby request (sheesh)! I’ve had to do this type of thing more than once! The odd thing is that it’s always the grandparents that want it done. Strange! Very nice work by the way. I think someone may have mentioned this before, but it would be sweeeet to see a live caricature video- to see how the whole airbrush thing is done. I have seen airbrush caricatures before and I have to say that a lot of them are kinda sloppy (blurry and outside of the lines, etc) Yours are the cleanest I’ve seen.

I was wondering if anyone was going to notice that! Actually what happened there was I started drawing the body intending him to be swinging through and being at the end of his swing. I asked him if he was a lefty first and he said yes, then after I’d drawn the hands, shoulders and arms his mom told me he throws left, bats right. So I drew his lower body in a before swing position, but it was too late to change the hands. That’s also why the composition is so left heavy. Originally I intended his lower body and legs to extend to the right.

    Oh well.

Your forgiven Tom! lol I still have to model grips and leg positions on lefty/righty baseball-golf-hockey swings and follow throughs to make sure they’re right.
The girl in the silver bikini top looks like she’s an exotic dancer.
When I draw live and when people sit down I try to guess to myself what they do for a living based upon what I observe and then ask them to see if I’m right or wrong. Kind of fun to do to break up the monotony of a long line.

Hahah, *Ed* really draws baby hands and arms really meaty and muscle-y!!

  6. SteveH says:

Very cool Tom, I wonder which name Ed uses when he sign’s his drawings… snigger snigger!

Great idea. The “Steckley” moniker reminds me of Mort Drucker’s “Benchley” comic strip from the late 80’s.

lol, suddenly ‘ed steckley’ takes all the credit. 😀 .
