More Super Capers Movie Stuff
Right now I am deeply immersed in trying to kick out a 13 page full color promotional comic book that is to be given away as a promo item for the movie “Super Capers”. I did a bunch of illustration work for the film, which will appear during the opening credits and in a flashback scene near the beginning of the movie. The movie will debut in select theaters on March 20th, and if sells a predetermined number of tickets it will get picked up by a major distributor (there is a deal in place) and will be shown in about 2000 theaters this summer. I actually have a credit in the opening credits, complete with a caricature of me (sort of) at the drawing board.
I just got a package with some of the other promotional items for the film, and one was a figurine of the main character “Ed Gruberman” as played by actor Justin Whalin (Jimmy Olsen in “Lois and Clark”). It was sculpted and produced based on a “turnaround” I did of the character. Here’s the partial turnaround:
Here’s the figurine. It’s very small at only about four inches tall including base.

It’s always interesting to see something try and make the jump from 2-D drawing to 3-D sculpture. I thought they did a pretty good job with this, especially considering how small the sculpt must have been.

Off-topic, but Ed Gruberman is the name of a character in a skit/song called Ti Kwan Leep/Boot to the Head by a Canadian comedy group called The Frantics. Any relationship between the two characters?
Nice turns on your character. I found doing turns, pretty challenging. How did it go for you?

Very nicely done! –Both the drawings and the sculpting on the figure. Great details in the hair, browbone and facial muscles.
I couldn’t help noticing that the the head is proportionately much larger in the figurine than in your drawings. (It almost looks like a classic, ‘big-head caricature’ proportion.) Did they discuss the reason for that with you?
I saw the prototype and noticed that right away. I didn’t ask about it, as it’s their toy and they can do as they please, but I suspect that given the small size of the figure they wanted to make the face larger so it could have a little more detail.
I always admire artists that can put their visions to paper. Your sulpture is fantastic, better than the 2D.
