My Minnesota Illustration Workshop is on!
After a lot of thought I’m giving a new type of workshop a try in early 2020. This is very different from my caricature workshops, as this one focuses on caricature-based illustration and the techniques I use.
This workshop will take place near my home here in Minnesota on March 27-29th. I know, I know… MARCH in Minnesota? Actually March is traditionally snowy but much warmer that the deep winter, and this is the end of March, so temps are typically above freezing in the 40’s or so. Besides, all this is happening INDOORS you know.
I will share my process and techniques on two different types of caricature illustration work: a 1/2 page editorial feature illustration and a kid’s orientated 1/2 page sports illustration. Each student choses which project they want to do. I will work alongside the class doing my version of one of the projects, guiding the students through the conceptual, sketch, final pencil and final art stages of each project. I will conduct lessons in the following techniques:
- Concept, “narrative”, composition and rough sketches
- Final pencils and prep for inking
- Traditional inking with dip pen and brush
- Watercolor coloring and digital coloring
I will be working individually with each student as well and the class, and we will have class reviews/critiques of each student’s work at different stages. Students will be required to provide a lot of their own art supplies, although I will provide crow quill pens, ink and inkwells. Students can bring their own versions of those supplies if desired. I’ll also have a scanner and other tech stuff with for the digital crowd.
The fee for this workshop is less than my caricature ones at $375 because of the extra expenses of the supplies, the short notice, and the need to travel here. The good part is the first night happens in my home and studio, so you’ll get to see a lot of “behind the curtain” stuff and examples of exactly what we’ll be doing all weekend.
This one will not travel and I definitely won’t be doing it again until 2021, if ever. So, if this interests you, you might want to jump on it soon. My minimum number of students to not cancel is 9.
