On the Drawing Board

I am deep in the middle of a TV parody for MAD, so I can’t post much of what has been ursurping my time lately. I did just finish this pencil rough for another workplace poster job:

These are always fun. As I’ve said before it’s refreshing to do jobs with no caricature involved… just straight cartoon illustration. This one is obviously for a spring print release.

Next week the Dreaded Deadline Demon will likely be making some appearances as I need to get the MAD job done by next Friday.

Tom looking great but may I just point out one little thing thats bothering me? Hope you don’t mind, but the ball has bounced in the wrong direction, it should follow through onto the left side of your illustration. The way you have it would mean that the ball had to have a lot of backspin, similar to what golfers can pull off when playing a shot, but baseball as far as I know, is unable to achieve that level of backspin and the ball just ploughs on through. Hope you dont mind me mentioning this! Hey your artwork is hanging in my studio now and soon I will have photo’s of them to show you!

Steve, you are absolutely right about the direction of the ball. However I felt that balancing the composition was far more important than making sure the laws of physics were strictly adhered to. Plus I like how the ball is bouncing away from the collision rather than past it.

Besides I learned my cartoon physics from Wile E. Coyote. Anything goes in cartoons.
