On the Drawing Board

April 19th, 2007 | Posted in On the Drawing Board

I’m back from soggy New England and the drawing board is getting stacked up…

MAD movie parody- I can’t divulge any details but it’s sure to be a big blockbuster film and it’s longer than recent parodies have been at seven pages. This will be one of those parodies done in advance of the movie’s release, but as it’s a sequel that isn’t so bad. No more hints! The job also has a nice, long deadline for the end of May, so I won’t have to rush it. It’s been a full year since my last movie parody (Superman Returns) so I am looking forward to this one.

Workplace poster- Yet another of these, and they are always fun images. Many of them concern the health care industry, and convey a message of “teamwork” via a humorous image of some kind. This one will show how a diverse group of very individual people all work together to care for a single patient.

Ad job- This one is very unique, and also one I can’t get specific about. The client is Ballpark Franks, and it pertains to a new ad campaign they are launching. Tight deadlines, but hopefully I can keep the Dreaded Deadline Demon at bay.

As always, I’ll share some of the stages and final art when it’s appropriate to do so.

Pirates? maybe ? I understand you cant say!
I have a question Tom, When you do a parody and the drawing includes other “trademark” characters ( like simpsons, southpark, disney, etc.), are there any LEGAL implications or do they hide under the safety umbrella of a “PARODY”? I’ve always wondered what was SAFE to include in a drawing without lawyers knocking on your door.

  2. No matter who draws the parody, I’m buying the issue with the parody of Harry Potter and the Order Of The Phoenix. I’m sure that one will be a big seller. If you draw it, I’ll just be even happier to buy that issue.
Given the length of the parody, I’d guess the movie of the longest Harry Potter book to date. Of course, you probably don’t even want to tell us what it’s NOT, because that’s a clue too.
So many choices of movies to parody this summer! No doubt that Harry Potter will get a parody, given MAD’s history with him.

I look forward to pointing at the Ballpark Franks ads(whatever medium they’re in) and bragging that I’ve met the artist that drew those.
