On the Drawing Board
Finally wrapping up a long run of job on top of job. One small spot to do for MAD and then a few long promised gratis pieces, and then I can almost guarantee I’ll have gotten a few more calls and the board will be busy again. As a freelancer, that is a very good problem to have.
Many clients would rather I do not post the finished work prior to publication, but some don’t mind so here are a couple of pieces from the last week:
This is a half page spot for one of the Scholastic magazines. This is supposed to be a take off on “High School Musical”. My kids knew all about it but I’d never heard of it. Must be popular because MAD Kids had a photo-caricature on their cover a few issues ago. I had to “tone down” the caricatures of the guy with the basketball and the blonde which I though ended up lessening the likenesses, but the client is always right.
This was for the National Cartoonists Society‘s Foundation, of which I am a board member and committee chairman. This will be used in a promotional poster for the cartooning scholarships the NCS Foundation is administering this year. The image is supposed to represent different disciplines of cartooning. If anyone is interested in applying for the scholarship(s), and will be at the San Diego Comic Con this month, drop by the NCS booth and grab one of the posters. Once they are printed and the information is released, I will write about the details here on how to apply for the scholarships.
I will not be at the San Diego Comic Con this year. There is just too much going on in the summer for me to be able to take a trip like that. Besides, that convention is becoming such a monster I don’t know if I want to fight the sea of humanity and it’s various ebbs and tides just to get a look around. Maybe next year. Those who are attending, have a great time.

Tom,
The HSM illustration looks great. My kids turned me and my wife on to High School Musical and to be honest it’s a nice Disney movie/musical for kids. There is a second one coming in August and all the kids are in a frenzy over it. You got them and to be honest if you toned down the boy (Zac Efron) and the blonde(Ashley Tisdale) I can’t notice cause they look exactly like them. Hey it’s good clean fun for the whole family to watch.
Take Care
Paul
“The client is always right.” Words that seem to be missing from many businesses these days. (But like you, I agree completely.)
The NCS poster is beautiful, down to the last detail.
That’s the truth. Mark. I’ve written on the blog before about how the hallmark of the true professional is the ability to take emotional response out of the equation and work to make the client happy. Jack Davis is famous for that. He has no problem at all scrapping an entire piece of pencilled genius and doing it over if the client wants something different.
Thanks for the compliments on the pieces, gentlemen.
