On the Drawing Board
March 15th, 2011 | Posted in On the Drawing Board
It’s rare that I don’t do any posting on The MAD Blog on any day but Saturday, but yesterday I was completely swamped after an all-nighter sunday night/Monday morning and some furious painting on a magazine cover illustration due yesterday afternoon. Then I passed out. Still recovering but on two two other jobs due ASAP, having just finished up a bunch of jobs in the last three weeks since getting back from vacation. Here’s what I’ve done since Feb 22th:
- NCS Reuben Weekend Illustration– See here
- 6 page MAD TV parody for #509– Another fun one of another popular show
- Illustration for the Food Network– Unknown if I can ever share this, it was for some in-house project
- Workplace Poster illustration– My usual assignment
- Sculpture turnaround design– For promo item for “I Want Your Money” film
- Magazine cover for Utne Reader– On news stands in April, will share when appropriate
Here’s what I’ve still got on the board right now:
- Jeff Dunham illustrations– Pencil revisions on two images today and finishing one final tonight
- Bobble Rep caricatures– A few of the 105 heads of new congress members for the iPhone app, due this week
- Workplace poster– Yep, already have my new assignment there.
I need another vacation.
Here’s some of the images from the above completed jobs I can share:

Hey, I see Dr. Watson there!
Yep! That’s my dog in that poster illustration… took forever to draw him as he refused to hold that pose for more than a second or two.
Good to see another TV show parody. Hope I’ve seen the show before haha š I like that MAD has being trying to keep a steady flow of them since they went quartely/bi-monthly, because are classic MAD material and they show off the best of the writer and artist who make them. The one regret is that its been ages since a full length parody drawn by Hermann Mejia or Mort Drucker has appeared.
I have no idea why Mort’s work isn’t in MAD as much anymore. You’d have to ask him. I’m also not sure why Hermann hasn’t done any parodies lately, but he has been steadily contributing to the magazine with shorter features. He had a great piece in the MAD 20 two issues ago of the cast of “The Jersey Shore”, and did something for the Fundalini pages last issue.
EDIT- Originally in this comment I said I thought Mort might be “largely retired” (although I added I did not know for sure), but that definitely not the case. Mort is still very busy working for many clients, and still as brilliant as ever.
Oh yeah, that Hermann ‘Jersey Shore’ piece in the MAD 20 was awesome. Beautiful in its disgustingness.
Great work Tom
Is Monster Lo carb still your energy drink of choice?
Yes, but I have cut way back on it. I only drink one per day (if any) in the normal course of events, and only during an all-night marathon do I resort to multiple cans.
Tom,
That carpet illustration really hits me where I live. You may or may not be aware that my real livelihood involves the selling and installation of floor covering, including lots of carpet! I’m president of a small family floor covering business that ‘s been around since the mid 70s. I can say that, though slightly exaggerated (we don’t cover over many pets), the rush-rush time element is spot on!.
I’ll be making this the office computer’s wallpaper!.
Thanks,
Doug
