On the Drawing Board- 8/2/11
Last month was one of the craziest months I have ever had in the studio. Besides the theme park operations in full summer swing, I did a six page parody for MAD, a two pager for Sports Illustrated Kids, several spot illustrations for Penthouse, a bunch of work for the ongoing project for comedian Jeff Dunham, art for two episodes of the MAD animated show for WB Animation/Cartoon Network and two poster illustrations for The Marlin Company, plus most of the art for the book… oh, yeah… and Comic-Con. Whew.
Right now I have nothing on the drawing board except the few illustrations I need to place and do captions for on the very last of the book, which goes to press on Aug. 15th. I’ve been turning down jobs in order to free up the first two week in August to wrap it up and get the files to the printer. Everything in on track for a timely arrive of the printed copies in mid-September as promised, and then a crazy week of shipping all the pre-orders I have received so far. Thanks to everyone who has placed an order!

Wow, Tom, been going a little heavy on the lat pulldowns and one-arm dumbell rows? Your lats look phenomenal… ;o)

So, just judging by the “at the drawing-board” image, how’s your leg training? 😉
I only ignore my legs in self-caricatures… not in the gym. I have unusually long and narrow calf muscles, and i have found it impossible to build bulk in them even though I can do some big weight with calf raises. When wearing long walking shorts or surfer swim trunks I get accused of being one of those guys who only works the upper body, but I actually have big thighs and extremely strong legs. I’ve gotten well over 1,000 lbs in the leg press when doing strength and power training, although I doubt I’ll ever get that heavy again at age 45.
Thanks for replying. Just out of curiosity since you mentioned leg press, did you or do you ever squat?
(Personally, I suck at squatting, but I keep hearing it’s the king of exercises for building your legs AND overall strength.)
Yes, I do squats. I hate them, and am no good at them for heavy weight. I have poor flexibility despite stretching plenty, and keeping back on my heels and still getting down all the way is hard. I have gotten to over 450 lbs on free-weight squats (for low reps… one or two) with a lot of work leading up to it, but a purist would probably scoff at my form. Despite all that, I always do them with most leg routines because you are exactly right, they ARE the king of movements and have a whole host of benefits besides building big legs. They are great for overall strength, core strength, and they produce a natural testosterone surge that helps build muscle. Generally 325-350 is a heavy squat weight for me, and that is light compared to what some guys can do.
Deadlifts are the other exercise I hate doing that are crucial for overall bodybuilding and development. Same principal with core, total body strength and testosterone surge as well as blasting your entire back and legs. Hate them, do them anyway.
Can’t wait to see what you’re doing for Jeff Dunham, the guy and his characters are just amazing. Saw him in concert and as his last encore, one of his dummies had HIS OWN dummie! LOLOL!!!
Tom, I’m THRILLED to hear you have another six-page MAD parody on the way! Your work has been amazing this year (including the “Sad Men” parody which you’ve included in the collage for this very blog post!) and is a treat to read and re-read…Can’t wait to see what you’ve got in store for us! (Hope it’s in this month’s issue, #511!)
