Quick LOST thought

I read this CNN article yesterday which talks about the changing of a TV show’s direction of focus to try and “fix” it with respect to ratings and viewership. They talk about several shows that are getting that kind of makeover to try and salvage their ratings. In passing they mention that LOST has seen a dramtic drop in ratings since coming back on the air compared to last season and last fall’s ratings. The article quotes a veteran TV producer saying ABC needs to add a stronger lead in show for LOST and concentrate on lead character storylines. Another TV expert feels LOST is irreparably damaged.

Last night’s episode did not help matters. While it made me laugh out loud a few times, it offered little else. Here is a spoiler synopsis of the storyline/plot advance from last nights episode:

Hurley finds a old VW van in the jungle, full of beer. Hurley and friends get van started, drive it in circles, drink beer. In Hurley backstory we find out his father returned after 17 years, Hurely still thinks he’s cursed. Hurley goes to Australia in search of an answer to the numbers curse. Kate tells Rousseau her daughter is alive and with the Others, asks for her help in rescuing Jack.

This show had the following lead in teaser: “If you don’t watch the next 60 minutes of LOST, you won’t know what everyone is talking about tomorrow!”

I’m talking about 60 minutes of nothing. Comedic relief. No story advancement whatsoever. If LOST does not get back it’s audience after the long hiatus they are getting what they deserve serving up filler episodes like this one. The worst part is that I am not frustrated anymore. I am no longer caring. That is the worst thing that could happen to the show: apathy. The ride is getting boring. Get on with it…
