Sketch O’The Day
February 19th, 2007 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week
If there was ever a poster child for the seedy side of becoming famous, she is it. I bought an entertainment mag with Anna Nicole Smith on the cover intending it as reference for this sketch at a train station bookstore. The clerk who rang me up immediately offered me her opinion on the matter. “Double murder”, she says. She’s probably right, but it’s the circus of it all that makes me cringe.

You know what makes me cringe? Prominent news shows referring to her as “our modern day Marilyn Monroe”, just because they were both blonde Playmates who died before hitting 40. But nuts to all that, Britney shaved her head!!
This is a really well done caricature.
I also don’t see the parallels with Marilyn. Monroe was a national phenomenon and a true sex symbol, adored by millions. Anna Nicole wasn’t much more than a train wreck with giant breasts.
Thanks, Matt!
hah great work tom! its a silly situation, just feel sad for the girls who idolized her…
Zack told me about your sketch as I labored away on my Anna prelims at work today … you couldn’t have let me finish mine first? 😉
She?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s no Marilyn to be sure, but she had all the ingredients of a contemporary celebrity: something to desire (her debatable beauty) and something to mock (her undeniable mental shortcomings). It?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a strange phenomenon that seems more and more common ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú celebrities becoming objects to simultaneously envy and detest. Anyway, here?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s my theme-less effort for your amusement or something (new A3 scanner = woo hoo!):
