Sketch o’the Week
August 18th, 2010 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week
This week’s sketch: pop star Katy Perry. A lot of people seem to dislike her, thinking she’s extremely vulgar and overtly sexual… but I think she’s doing all that over the top stuff with tongue firmly in cheek (insert “tongue firmly in somewhere joke here”). She’s intentionally being a parody of the Britney Spears/Christina Aguilera school of candy-like sex doll pop singers.

I agree, Tom. And though her music is candy-like also, it’s kinda catchy and fun and harmless. Anyway, really like the drawing, but why not make her hair dark?
The reference pics I used had her in either a platinum blonde or blue wig. I just went with that.
Cool sketch.
Many recording artist purposely do that from time to time.
Glad I’m not the only one who picked up on the parody aspects of her style. The over-the-top “California Gurls” video (complete with her squirting cupcake bikini top) seems to be mocking the whole concept of pandering, sexed-up videos. But then again…you’re not quite sure. It’s that whole “off-balance” or possibly “smarter than everyone in the room” quality about Perry that’s strangely appealing to an old coot like me.
The oddest thing about this girl is she used to be a Christian singer. Her name was Katy Hudson…
