Sketch o’the Week
This week’s SotW subject is The Walking Dead‘s Andrew Lincoln. I started watching this show this year after several friends recommended it, so it has the rare distinction of being the only show I actually watch on TV without having been assigned the parody for MAD. I am sure the creators of the show are thrilled about this honor 🙄 .
I have been enjoying the show, which just wrapped it’s second season on Sunday. They have managed to avoid the obvious pittfalls of serials based on action/horrow/sci-fi premises wherein viewers get bored when there is too much talking and not enough stuff like zombies. The characters are interesting, and all very flawed. You can’t quite like any of them entirely, and some of them can really get on your nerves . . . so can imagine if these suddenly were the only people in your life, similar emotions would happen in real life. They still manage to get plenty of action in, and they are not afraid to suddenly kill major characters off with little foreshadowing. I am a little concerned that Lincoln’s character Rick is going to now become an asshole, because he was one of the few who was still hanging on to some basic civility and semblance of a democratic system of living. We shall see . . .

Walking Dead would really lend itself to some excellent parody… I’d love to see it! You should take it on!
Also if you like the TV show, you’ll love the comic books. I read the first 85 issues in one sitting. They’ve changed things enough on the show that it doesn’t even spoil anything either. My only complaint about the show is at the pace they are going, it’s probably going to take 20 seasons just to catch up to where the storyline in the comic books is right now.
I have avoided the comics for the spoilers, but I hear that the stories are divergent and getting more so as it goes along. Might have to check them out.
Hi Tom
Love your hatching, as always. Do you keep your drawings of this type upright throughout the process, or do you rotate them to get the best angle for your hand, when doing the shading? If so, how far do you go, are they ever upside-down?
I rotate them about some, but almost never upside down.
I was hoping you’d do a WD caricature. I did one of Dale awhile ago that turned out ok so I tried to do Shane which seemed easy with his big nose and constant scowl but all I ended up with was a trashcan full of crumpled papers. I’ll have to try again another time. Nice job i learn much from your SOTWs. 🙂
Tom, I have been a big fan of your site and am diligently reading your book, and practicing, and someday hope to be able to draw half as good as you, but, that said, i’m just not seeing the resemblance to Rick here- Sorry
Not my best drawing ever, but NO resemblance? 🙄
Well, maybe the hat…..
At first I thought it was actor James Cromwell but I can see some Andrew Lincoln in this Sketch! Nice job Tom.
There was something about the sketch that was bugging me, and you’ve definitely hit on it:
It does look more like Cromwell than Lincoln.
I can’t believe this guy is English. He’s so convincing in the show…. I was quite surprised when I heard his accent in an interview. great drawing.
Yeah, I’m definitely NOT into zombie stuff whatsoever (and am continually perplexed by its ongoing popularity), but my son got me hooked on the show! The reason? It’s not really about zombies at all, but rather the interesting moral conflicts the non-zombies have to deal with. In fact, I believe the title “Walking Dead” refers to the *humans* and not the zombies.
