Sketch o’the Week
September 5th, 2012 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week
Since this week is mostly dedicated to my recent USO trip, here’s an actual drawing I did on the USS Enterprise. Josh was one of the many Navy folks I met and drew, and he was kind enough to make a copy of it and give it to me when I was aboard. It got a little wrinkled on the trip home. Time about 8 minutes, but we chatted for a bit longer. Come home safely, Josh!

Once again Tom Thanks for putting a little smile on our troops! The cartoonist community is truly the architect’s of laughter!
I just bought and read your good book. Wow, I’m a bit overwhelmed as this is new path for me and I have long way to go. Coming from a painter background I’m used to working from a ‘sketching and blocking in tonal areas’ rather than a linear one. So this is a big change in direction for me. My question is a simple one, I know you stress the shape of the head as one of the most important considerations, but do I draw it first? (this is how I would normally do in painting) Drawing eyes, nose, mouth and doing it last seems well odd to me. Do you just remember in your head – this guys head reminds me of peanut and then do it last? The other question regarding your book, I did not understand the page about the ‘force” even though I reread it 4 times… are you talking about the length of space?
I think that it is excellent in content I also think that is great I’ve also bought your book the mad art of characters in have learned so much thank you
