Sketch o’the Week
February 6th, 2013 | Posted in Sketch O'The Week
Better late than never today, even if I am doing another of my shameless plugs for the Limited Artist’s Edition of my book, complete with a caricature of YOU (or the person of your choice) drawn by me in a signed, numbered, limited-to-120-editions copy.
To make it up to you, I will make this into a little lesson. Below is the main reference pic I used to draw Jayce here, and below that are the observations I made about his face, with corresponding mark-ups on the photo.
- Overall head shape: Long. Need to elongate head and the correspondingly narrow face.
- Narrow bridge of nose, strong bone structure
- Outside corner of eye very high and flattened
- upper mouth area distinctively shaped, wide past corners of mouth
- Small, slightly recessed chin
- Strong lines from chin to mouth corner, again from behind that line to cheekbone
- Strong cheekbones
Forgot to mention eyebrows. Very distinct shape, flat across bottom and angled into that bony nose bridge in an “angry” sort of way.

That’s very helpful. Thanks, Tom.
Got my book #24! It is awesome! I believe that is the closes likeness that has ever been drawn! I love it! The book is a gold mine of information! Very helpful in polishing something I really enjoy doing!
Thank you so much!
So glad you like the book, and thanks for getting one of my L.A.E.’s!
Bought “Mad for …….” book last week !
Weekly caricatures are of great help, Tom you are miracle personified.

This system (with scratches) is perfect to learn and understand how to build a caricature.
I saw things that I have never seen before!! /o
From Brazil.
Will you do more of these? I’ve diligently read through both the book and the web tutorial versions and done studies, but walkthroughs like this are invaluable for putting all this knowledge together and into practice. It just ‘clicks’. Amazingly useful.
Yes, I could do more like this.
Great post Tom. It helps to see what you are seeing in a face. I have your book and try to notice the variations in a face from the “norm”, but I still find it difficult. This type of example is very helpful to help me see. Great work and I enjoy reading your posts!
