Sketch o’the Week

Not nearly as ambitious as last week’s sketch, but here’s a study of another TV actor: Michael C. Hall, star of Showtime’s Dexter. I’ve never seen the show, but I hear it’s pretty good. Watching TV is one thing I just don’t have the time for… except for a few choice shows and whenever I am required to study a show for a MAD job.

I love these weekly sketches because I have to scroll down to find out who’s been caricatured, and it gives me a chance to see if I can figure it out first. So far (I’ve been reading for several months) I’ve always been able to, assuming I know the person in the first place.

I’m curious, though: at what point were able to reliably capture a likeness? I’m a lifelong doodler and an art school graduate, and while I can draw a nice-looking picture, I usually have a rough time of getting a spot-on likeness like you’re always able to, which is frustrating since I’ve always loved caricature and wanted to be able to do it. I realize I probably just need to keep practicing, but it’s always encouraging to hear that even the artists you admire once struggled with the same things you did. Please tell me it’s so!

Another solid sketch that inspires me to work harder at my own feeble attempts!

Hahaha nice sketch. Reminds me of the MAD parody Hermann Mejia drew. I like the way you make him look so unattractive. Dexter is a pretty good show, but I kind of tune out in the bits when he isn’t killing people.

Well, Tom you did it again! I have followed the show and not only did you nail the likeness, but you really conveyed the attitude. Too bad that MAD’s already down a parody of Dexter, but I’m hoping that they’ll ask you to tackle Mad Men. I think you’d have a blast with the settings, fashions, and especially those 60’s gals in their bullet bras.
