Sketch o’the Week- Welcome Back Kotter!

We continue with our 70’s sitcom series with the cast of “Welcome Back Kotter”, Ron Palillo, John Travolta, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Robert Hegyes, John Sylvester White and Gabe Kaplan.

This show was top of my list for favorite sitcoms when I was a kid. It aired in the late seventies when I was between 9 and 13, so the timing was perfect for me to understand the jokes and themes, but also made it just a little bit “adult” and therefore felt like I was getting away with watching something I maybe wasn’t supposed to. I do remember watching it during its original run and thinking “why are all these grown ups pretending to be high school kids??”. That did not tarnish my enjoyment of the show. Many years after I met and got to know him, I learned my pal, writer extraordinary Mark Evanier, was a writer on the show for a while. He recently retold a little story on his excellent blog from his time on the show that is worth a read.
