Some Rare Original MADness!

October 13th, 2022 | Posted in MAD Magazine

Back in 2019 MAD stopped publishing original content (mostly), and I thought I had perhaps done my last movie/TV parody for the magazine. Prior to that I had pretty freely sold my original MAD artwork, both here on the website and at Comic Cons. It occurred to me after the “no new material” announcement that I wasn’t going to be making any more of these for MAD, so I basically stopped selling my originals. I thought it best to hang on to them.

That said I thought it was time to make some of these originals available for sale, and as subscribers you all get a first look at what’s available AND get a subscriber only discount!

I have placed a couple dozen original pages from both movie and TV parodies from MAD in my Studio Store. If you’ve never seen an original MAD page, these are VERY big at 17 x 21.5 inches. That’s “twice up” or 2x the size of the printed pages. Why so big?… E.C. comics tradition. Ever since the early days of “Tales from the Crypt” and the Harvey Kurtzman comic book MAD, the artists have done pages at twice the size of print. Who was I to argue with (at the time) 50 years of tradition? Anyway all these pages are that size, and the two page spreads are two boards that when put together are a whopping 33.5″ x 21.5″!!

I am also including the pasted up text and graphics on the originals. This is done using archival materials, so the original art won’t be damaged.

Also for the first time I have entire full parodies available. All the original art from “This is Pus“, “Silly Wonky and the Town of Flavor“, “Merry Poopins Goes to the White House” and “The Hunger Pains: Much Delay Parts 1 and 2” are available as complete packages with all the pages from the spoof together. That’s only as long as no individual pages go unpurchased though. I am still offering each page individually as well, so if any of them sell the “complete parody” package goes by the boards.

The “This is Pus” spoof of the TV show “This is Us” is of particular interest to collectors, I think. It is the last TV/movie parody to appear in a New York issue of MAD. #550 was the final issue produced by the New York staff. The following issue started the renumbering of the magazine at #1, and was produced by a new team out of Burbank, CA.

It’s tough to find MAD original these days… and we aren’t making any more of it (well, not much more). Check them out to get yourself or that special someone a piece of MAD history for the holidays… because even the embarrassing stuff like this is now history!

  1. Tom, your drawings are absolutely amazing, right up there in the top tier with Mort, Wally Wood, Kirby, Ditko, Rockwell and the rest. Brilliant, young man.
