Sunday Mailbag: Emotional Caricatures?
May 23rd, 2021 | Posted in Mailbag
Q: When you worked at Six Flags Great America, did you ever have a customer so deeply touched by his or her caricature that they actually shed a tear?
A: Well, I did make a few people cry with my caricatures… but not for the reason you mentioned.
Thanks to David Strickler for the question. If you have a question you want answered for the mailbag about cartooning, illustration, MAD Magazine, caricature or similar, e-mail me and I’ll try and answer it here!

Lol!
I wonder if you remember this, Tom. On one of your visits to St. Louis you hung out with me for a while at the Union Station caricature stand (guessing you were killing time before the flight back home). A woman came up with a photo of her dog. I did the drawing, she paid, gave it to her, and she left. It was then that you told me, “Y’know, you just drew a deceased dog. She was crying the whole time behind you.”. Hopefully that gave her a bit of comfort.
In the current political climate is it difficult, illustrating, African Americans, without being labeled racist? Have you ever felt that you were walking on egg shells while drawing a parody?
